At Long Point Animal Hospital we are ready to assist in helping to keep your family’s pets healthy and happy. Long Point Animal Hospital has been serving the Charleston and East Cooper areas since 1999. We are open five days a week, Monday through Friday, with an early noon closing on Wednesdays to spend time with our two children.

🎃👻 Halloween is almost here! Before the costumes come out and the candy bowls fill up, let's make sure our furry friends are ready for a safe and spooky night!

Keep these Halloween hazards in mind:

🍫 Keep the candy out of reach. Chocolate and sugar-free treats containing xylitol can be dangerous for pets.

🚪 Watch those open doors! Trick-or-treaters mean lots of doorbell rings and opportunities for curious pets to slip outside. Consider giving them a quiet, secure space away from the front door.

🕯️ Be careful with decorations. Candles, electrical cords, glow sticks, and small decorations can all spell trouble for curious paws and mouths.

👻 Costumes aren't for everyone. If your pet isn't comfortable dressing up, let them celebrate in their birthday suit! If they do wear a costume, make sure it doesn't restrict their movement, breathing, or vision.

🏷️ Double-check their ID. Make sure collars, tags, and microchip information are up to date—just in case your little ghost makes an unexpected getaway.

A little preparation can help keep Halloween spooky for you, not scary for your pet! 🐾🧡

🐱🐱 Spaying does more than prevent kittens—it can protect your cat’s health, too!

Spaying your female cat is an important part of preventive care, with benefits that can last throughout her life.

✨ Spaying can:
• Prevent life-threatening uterine infections like pyometra
• Prevent diseases of the uterus and ovaries
• Eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancy
• Significantly reduce the risk of mammary (breast) cancer

And that last one is especially important for cats: about 85% of feline mammary tumors are malignant. Spaying early provides the greatest protection, with the risk of mammary cancer decreasing by up to 91% when cats are spayed before 6 months of age.

Spaying isn't just about population control—it's an investment in your cat's long-term health and well-being. 🐾🐾

🐾 “But isn’t my pet too old for anesthesia?”

It’s a concern we hear often—but age itself is not a disease. ❤️

Senior pets can experience changes in their heart, lungs, kidneys, and metabolism, and they are more likely to have other health conditions as they age. That’s why we take extra care to evaluate each senior patient before anesthesia and tailor their anesthetic plan to their individual needs. 🩺

Being older doesn’t automatically mean your pet can’t safely undergo anesthesia. Our goal is to understand their health, anticipate their needs, and monitor them carefully every step of the way.

Your pet’s age is just one piece of the bigger picture. 🐶🐱💛

Cats can be notoriously picky about their water, and staying hydrated is an important part of supporting urinary health.🚰🐈‍⬛

If your cat isn't a big drinker, try:
💧 Offering a water fountain
💧 Keeping multiple water bowls around the house
💧 Using wide, shallow bowls
💧 Adding wet food to their diet
💧 Keeping water fresh and away from the litter box
