Yay for Winnie 🎉 She recently received the “all clear” from Dr. Freeman following her hemilaminectomy surgery 🩷 Winnie ⭐️

Meet Choco 🤎 Choco originally presented to LVNS for nonambulatory paraparesis. An MRI confirmed an IVD extrusion and he underwent an L4-5 right sided hemilaminectomy. Since surgery, Choco continues to improve and is able to walk unassisted. Sound the LVNS Gong, Choco 🤎

Feel Good Friday brought to you by Parker ☀️

Parker presented to LVNS in May for evaluation of pelvic limb weakness. After Dr. Freeman’s neurological exam of Parker, a blood test was submitted for acetylcholine antibody receptor titer. The results of his acetylcholine antibody test were consistent with myasthenia gravis (MG). Parker is being medically managed by Dr. Freeman and continues to do extremely well! We will repeat the titer tests every 3 to 6 months, as some dogs can go into remission 💙

Meet this handsome gent named Bogart 💙 Bogart was diagnosed with Steroid Responsive Meningitis Arteritis (SRMA) after presenting to Dr. Freeman for cervical pain and hyperthermia. The cause for SRMA is often unknown and most likely secondary to an immune mediated (autoimmune) condition. Most dogs do well with a gradual taper of prednisone; however, Bogart required a longer treatment. Bogart continues to do well on his medications and was very excited to sniff out the new clinic 🐾

At LVNS, we frequently see dogs for “episodes”. It is important for us to distinguish if the episodes are neurologic or non-neurologic in origin. There are neurologic episodes that are commonly confused with seizures, particularly paroxysmal dyskinesia. Videos and accurate histories are very important in differentiation.

Paroxysmal dyskinesia (PD) is a type of movement disorder. Pets typically have a “cramping” appearance to their limb/limbs. They do not lose consciousness and some can even wag their tails! Severity ranges from complete inability to walk to milder episodes where pets can walk. The episodes can last longer than is typical for a seizure and can occur during excitement or activity. In most dogs, they are a diagnosis of exclusion (and our experience); however, there are DNA tests in some breeds (episodic falling in CKCS). We can even see them occur in cats! Additional diagnostic and treatment recommendations will vary depending on the patient; however, these episodes are mostly benign and not as serious as seizure disorders.

The videos attached can show some of the variations of PD!
