ECG ⭐️ Rapid Atrial Fibrillation

In the past few months, we have had multiple patients come to us in rapid atrial fibrillation (AF), with their heart rates ranging from 190-240bpm!

AF is caused by multiple disorganised atrial impulses that depolarise the atria simultaneously, overwhelming the AV node. During this, atrial activation rate is rapid and can exceed 500 depolarisation a minute! Luckily, the refractory period (recovery period after stimulus) of the AV node does not allow all these impulses to the ventricles, preventing heart rates exceeding 250-300bpm🫀

ECG features of AF:
1. Absent P waves
2. Atrial activity is seen by fibrillatory (f) waves - these can be coarse or fine depending on amplitude
3. Irregular ventricular rhythm - depending on the patient, ventricular response can be rapid or slow. Rhythm can appear more regular as rapid rates also.

A visit to a specialist cardiologist is usually appropriate for these patients, where treatments such a certain anti-arrhythmic drugs or cardioversions may be considered.
