🐾 Understanding Dog Anxiety 🐾

Dog Anxiety Awareness Week, May 4-10, is a gentle reminder that our dogs have emotional needs too 💙

At Fremantle Animal Hospital, we often see pups who are feeling overwhelmed—whether it’s from loud noises, being left alone, or changes at home.

Some signs your dog might be feeling anxious:
• Pacing or restlessness
• Barking or whining more than usual
• Hiding or becoming withdrawn
• Destructive behaviour
• Panting when they’re not hot

In a small, calm clinic like ours, we take the time to go at your dog’s pace—because feeling safe makes all the difference.

If something doesn’t feel quite right with your pup, we’re always here for a chat 🐶

Just a friendly reminder ahead of the long weekend 🐾

Fremantle Animal Hospital will be closed on Saturday and Monday for Anzac Day.

If your pet needs any medications, prescription refills, or food, please make sure to call and request them before we close.

Running out over a long weekend can be stressful—especially when most places are shut—so a little planning ahead can make all the difference 💙

🦟 Did you know just ONE mosquito bite can put your dog at risk of heartworm?

Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease—but the good news is it’s completely preventable 💛

Here in WA, mosquitoes are around longer than you think, which means year-round protection is key.

✔️ Monthly preventatives or an annual injection
✔️ Annual testing
✔️ Simple peace of mind

🍫 Chocolate + Easter Egg Hunts = Risky Business for Pets 🐾

Easter egg hunts are fun for kids… but can be dangerous for pets.

🚫 Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs (and cats)

⚠️ The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is!

🐶 Signs of chocolate poisoning:
• Vomiting / diarrhoea
• Restlessness or hyperactivity
• Tremors or seizures

🐾 Top safety tips:
✔️ Keep pets indoors during egg hunts
✔️ Count eggs before & after
✔️ Clean up all wrappers (they’re a hazard too!)

🚨 If your pet eats chocolate, contact your vet ASAP – don’t wait

Let’s keep the only thing hunting eggs this Easter… the kids! 🐣

🌸 Lilies + Cats = A Dangerous Mix 🌸

Lilies are a popular Easter flower, but for cats they are EXTREMELY toxic.

⚠️ All parts of the plant are poisonous – even small exposures like:
• Brushing against pollen
• Drinking vase water
• Chewing leaves

🚨 This can lead to acute kidney failure, and symptoms may not appear straight away.

🐱 If your cat is exposed:
➡️ Seek urgent veterinary care immediately
➡️ Early treatment can be life-saving

💡 Our advice: Keep lilies out of cat households entirely

Please share this to help protect our feline friends this Easter 💛

🐾 Hot Cross Buns = Hot Mess for Pets! 🐾

They might be a delicious Easter treat for us, but hot cross buns can be dangerous for your pets.

🚫 Most contain raisins or sultanas, which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure – even in small amounts.

⚠️ Signs of poisoning may include:
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite

🐶 What to do:
If your pet sneaks a bite, contact your vet immediately – don’t wait for symptoms.

✔️ Keep baked goods out of reach
✔️ Remind guests not to share food with pets

Let’s keep Easter safe (and bun-free) for our furry friends 💛

⛈️ Storm Safety for Pets – Perth Weather Alert 🐾

With storms and wild weather expected across Perth this weekend, now’s the time to prepare your pets and keep them safe and calm at home.

Here’s how you can help your furry family members:

🐶 Keep pets indoors
Bring pets inside before the storm hits. Thunder, lightning and strong winds can cause panic and lead to pets escaping.

🏡 Create a safe, calm space
Set up a quiet, secure area with their bed and favourite toys. Close windows and curtains to reduce noise and flashes.

🎶 Use calming sounds
Playing soft music, white noise or the TV can help mask thunder and create a more relaxing environment.

🧸 Provide engaging distractions
Keep busy minds occupied with playtime, puzzle toys or long-lasting treats like frozen Kongs to help reduce anxiety.

🔒 Check fences & ID tags
Storms can damage fences and gates. Make sure your pet’s ID tag and microchip details are up to date.

⚡ Avoid going outside during storms
Skip walks until it’s safe—flooding, debris and lightning pose serious risks.

🚗 Be prepared
Have a pet emergency kit ready (food, water, medications, leash/carrier) in case you need to leave quickly.

💔 Watch for signs of anxiety
Panting, pacing, shaking or hiding are common signs. If your pet struggles during storms, talk to us about calming support options.

🌧️ After the storm
Check your yard for hazards like fallen branches or debris before letting pets back outside.

If you’re worried about your pet during storm season, reach out to our team—we’re here to help 💙
