Bunny owners, this one's for you 🐇 Rabbits have their own parasite quirks — including a real seasonal risk from myxomatosis, which is spread by fleas and mosquitoes. Never use leftover dog or cat flea products on a rabbit without checking with us first.

And speaking of spooky season: we won't be open for trick-or-treating this year — but pop in during the day and there'll be treats waiting for you (the human kind). 🍬

Rabbit owners — this is an important one before you reach for any flea product. 🐇

Not all flea and tick products are safe for rabbits. Simparica Trio, Revolution Plus and Felpreva are not for rabbit use.

The safe, vet-recommended option is plain Revolution — selamectin only. And that's an important distinction, because Revolution Plus (which is for cats) has a different formulation. Please don't mix them up.

With myxomatosis season running from October through May in Perth — and no vaccine available in Australia — insect control is the most important thing you can do for your rabbit right now. A fly-screened hutch and appropriate parasite prevention make a real difference.

Myxomatosis season is here — and this is one every rabbit owner in Perth should know about. 🐇

Myxomatosis isn't a parasite itself, but it's spread by fleas, mosquitoes and mites. In Perth, the transmission season runs roughly October through to May — so right now is when vigilance matters most.

There's no vaccine available in Australia, and the disease is close to universally fatal. That's the difficult reality. But the good news is that prevention is straightforward.

How to protect your rabbit:
1️⃣ Keep their hutch fly-screened to block insects
2️⃣ Use appropriate flea prevention — but always check with us first, since not all products are safe for rabbits
3️⃣ Minimise mosquito exposure, especially at dawn and dusk
4️⃣ Avoid areas with known wild rabbit populations

Insect control is the only real protection available — and it genuinely makes a difference.

Rabbit owners — this one's for you. 🐇🐾

Rabbits have their own parasite quirks that are quite different to dogs and cats, so it's worth knowing what to look for.

🔸 Ear mites (Psoroptes cuniculi): thick crusting inside the ear canal. It looks dramatic, but it's very treatable.
🔸 Rabbit fleas: unlike cat or dog fleas, rabbit fleas tend to prefer the ears — so that's the first place to check.
🔸 Walking dandruff (Cheyletiella): flaky, itchy skin that can occasionally cause a mild, transient rash in people who handle an affected rabbit.

The most important thing to know: never use a leftover dog or cat flea product on your rabbit without checking with us first. Not all products are safe for rabbits — and some can cause serious harm.

Revolution Plus covers fleas, paralysis ticks, ear mites, mange, lice, heartworm, roundworm and hookworm. Monthly dosing.

Felpreva — new at Bicton Vet this month — covers fleas, paralysis ticks, ear mites, roundworm, hookworm, lungworm and tapeworm. Every 13 weeks. And it's the only one of our cat products with tapeworm cover included.

Something a lot of cat owners don’t realise — cats can get heartworm too. 🐱

It’s less common than in dogs, but it’s harder to detect, which makes prevention even more important. And here’s the thing — it doesn’t matter whether your cat is indoor or outdoor. An infected mosquito can get inside, which means indoor cats can be exposed too.

Heartworm is spread only by mosquito bite — no pet-to-pet transmission at all. With mosquito season picking up, now is a good time to make sure your cat is covered.

As a clinic we have seen locally acquired heartworm cases here in Perth — usually in pets whose prevention has lapsed.

Here’s a quick breakdown of our current cat options:

🐱 Revolution Plus — monthly application, covers fleas, paralysis ticks, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, ear mites and biting lice. No tapeworm cover.

🐱 Felpreva — new this month, three-monthly application, covers fleas, paralysis ticks, ear mites, roundworm, hookworm, lungworm and tapeworm. The only one of our cat products with tapeworm cover included.

Here's why we recently switched to recommending Simparica Trio and Cazitel together for dogs — and why we think it's the most complete cover available. 🐾

Simparica Trio covers fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, mange and ear mites. But it doesn't reach whipworm or non-flea tapeworms.

That's where Cazitel comes in — covering roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, tapeworm (including hydatid), and Giardia shedding.

Together, they cover the full picture.

Here's something that surprises a lot of pet owners — your dog or cat can be carrying intestinal worms with no obvious signs at all. 🐾

The main ones we see in Australian pets:
🔸 Roundworm — very common, especially in puppies and kittens
🔸 Hookworm — picked up from contaminated soil
🔸 Whipworm — dogs only, stubborn and often silent
🔸 Tapeworm — often comes from fleas (another reason to keep flea prevention current)

Signs to watch for: poor coat condition, slow growth, pot-bellied look in young animals, visible worms or segments, vomiting or diarrhoea. But many pets show none of these — routine worming is the only real protection.

And yes — a couple of types can occasionally be picked up by people, especially kids playing in the yard. Routine worming and basic yard hygiene go a long way.
