This gorgeous girl is Kaia! Kaia was referred to Ourvets Halswell for her laparoscopic spey and gastropexy surgery. Kaia was kind enough to strike a pose for a pre-surgery photo with her surgeon Dr. Simon Howarth and a post-surgery photo with her anaesthetic nurse Takara. As typical, laparoscopic spey recovery is a quick process. Happy dog post-op means happy surgical team!

🩺A gastropexy is when the stomach is attached to the abdominal wall. Gastropexy is aimed at particularly “at risk” patients such as large breed/deep chested dogs. The major benefit of a gastropexy is to try prevent gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly known as “twisted stomach” / GDV / Bloat. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is when the stomach twists, therefore blocking the entrance and exit of the stomach causing the stomach to fill with gas then bloat while cutting off the blood supply to the stomach and other organs. A gastric dilatation-volvulus is a life threatening emergency and is fatal if not treated quickly. By attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall it significantly reduces the risk of the stomach twisting and causing gastric dilatation-volvulus.
