Tom’s measuring up the talent! 👀

This week vet Tom carried out a pre-breeding examination on this handsome pedigree Saler bull.

A full fertility exam helps to ensure the bull is fit, fertile and up to the job before he goes to meet the ladies!

The exam includes:
🏀 Full general health exam (pic 1)
🥎 Reproductive tract examination
⚽️ Scrotal circumference measurement (pic 2)
🎱 Semen collection (pic 3)
🏐 Semen examination (pic 4)
- motility (how well the s***m moves)
- morphology (s***m shape and structure)

The bull is then classified as satisfactory, unsatisfactory or deferred (to be retested) based on the findings.

This chap happily passed all stages with flying colours and is now ready to go to work out in the field! 🐂

A calving with a twist… literally! 🐄

This Holstein heifer calf was delivered following a 180° clockwise uterine torsion (twisted calf bed).

Around 1 in 20 difficult calvings we attend involve a uterine torsion. They’re more commonly seen in:
🐮 Older cows
🐮 Big or active calves
🐮 Low calcium levels
🐮 Cows with deep abdomens

Around 65% of torsions are anti-clockwise, making this clockwise twist a bit less common. ⏰

One of the most common signs farmers report is that the cow looked like she was getting ready to calve — but never started pushing…. If labour isn’t progressing as expected, it’s worth keeping torsion in mind!

Thanks to the early intervention of a diligent farmer and a quick correction by vet Lora, this calf was delivered safely. 🤩

As the temperature finally starts to warm up, the bluetongue risk is also increasing as the midge activity heats up. 🔥
Now is a good time to vaccinate or booster your herd or flock to give them protection for the year to come. The Bultavo vaccine needs 2 injections in cattle but only one in sheep and can be given as a single injection as a booster for previously vaccinated animals. Call us for your Bluetongue vaccine order today!
