Extraction in multiple pieces by advanced methods is a common occurrence when the crown is very decayed. These teeth are affected by infundibular caries, decay of the unfundibula, present on the upper cheek teeth. The decay can spread to affect the closeby pulps (the live part of the tooth) and killl the teeth and cause a tooth root infection. Did you know- Tooth number 09 is the most commonly affected by this disease?! These teeth are both 09s.

A funky-shaped one from earlier this week! Teeth that have been diseased a long time sometimes start to develop extra ‘knobbly’ bits which can make extraction tricky when the root area is wider than the rest of the tooth. This extraction took a little longer to elevate out of the socket than usual for this reason.
Note that the decay in the tooth makes crown fracture likely, and the separate pieces came away during extraction. Thankfully there was still enough crown to grasp, to enable oral extraction to continue.
Tooth is number 307 from a 4-year-old gelding.
