When removing a tooth, we always check the tooth and the inside the socket- in this case, we extracted the tooth but the pulp containing the blood vessels and nerves was remaining so had to be retrieved separately. Here it is above the tooth with its tentacle-like branches. This horse had a jaw swelling and discharging tract due to a perapical infection of the tooth.

Check out the decay inside this fractured tooth!

The blue areas highlight some of the pulp cavities which contain the living part of the tooth (blood vessels and nerves), referred to as the ‘pulp tissue’.

Did you know that a horse’s cheek teeth continuously erupt through the gums to compensate for the wear by the food that they chew?

When the pulp tissue of a cheek tooth dies due to irreversible inflammation, the tooth continues to erupt but the dead pulp can no longer produce dentin at the oral surface which normally seals the pulp cavities off, protecting them from food and bacteria in the mouth. Once worn past what seal is left following pulp death, the pulp cavities eventually become exposed to the mouth so food enters and causes decay.

This fractured tooth situation is sometimes the first signs of a dead tooth with a tooth root infection. There may be subtle changes to the surface of the tooth beforehand e.g. dentin defects over the pulp cavities which can only be detected by looking closely in a still patient (with a headtorch and mirror, or an endoscope).

Ouch!! This 6-year-old showed recent resentment at placement of the bit/bridle. Here is why- her incisor had fractured at the gum level and the crown was hanging on in there by gum only. You can see why we can’t just pull the loose crown off and leave it fractured off- most of the tooth is still there, with the sensitive pulp exposed in the centre of the fractured surface.

Thank you QiEquine for such a lovely post. Rob was happy to help 😊

Well done to Rob for providing an excellent service on behalf of Apex 👏

Rob is our dedicated routine equine dental vet. If you are interested in booking a routine appointment with him or have any other equine dental related enquiries please message via WhatsApp to 01254 476774, or alternatively call the same number, ensuring you leave a voicemail if we cannot answer right away.

Thank you Rob from Apex Equine Dental Surgery Ltd for fitting us in so quickly, being so calm and helping Morgana be more comfortable.
Any medical intervention is traumatic for Mo which makes it traumatic for me. However, today it went surprisingly well. Each vet visit is becoming just that little bit easier thanks to some amazing vets we are lucky enough to have on our side ❤️

New pricing as of 1st March 2025

We really value the continued support of our loyal customers and strive to continue providing you with a professional veterinary service of the highest standard. Unfortunately, as with most businesses, our running costs have risen significantly recently and as such we are forced to introduce price increases. We are pleased to continue offering substantial savings for group bookings and please note that the larger group bookings will benefit from the smallest percentage price increase.

Please see below our amended pricing for routine dentistry:

x 1 horse £110
x 2 horses £90 each
x 3-4 horses £85 each
x 5+ horses £78 each
x 10+ horses £75 each

The above includes a routine examination, rasp, visit charge & sedation (all our patients are sedated for treatment to ensure a thorough examination and treatment). Mileage fees will be applied if you wish to book an appointment outside of area visit days. Please note diastema flushing is charged between £30-£60 in addition to a routine dental and additional fees apply for additional procedures and medicines e.g. wolf tooth extraction and anti-inflammatories.

With all advanced cases, you will be provided with an estimate beforehand.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thanks
