Vet Patrick and vet tech Belle attended the XLVets Farm North Meeting and CPD earlier this week in Brampton, run by Capontree Vets. This was a great opportunity to meet vets and vet techs alike from other practices across the region.

We had a great talk from Duggan and Ovacyte which covered worm egg counting, with some discussion on Haemonchusโ€”which, with the use of Ovacyte, has now even been found on Shetland! Hopefully, coccidiosis speciation will be coming soon for sheep as well.

I know we go on to our sheep clients a lot about benchmarking, but it applies to us too! We had a talk about regional benchmarking with other vets. The aim is to compare our data going forward to allow us to see where we are doing well and identify areas to improve compared with other practicesโ€”hopefully those who face similar environmental challenges (plenty of rain!).

๐Ÿ“žQuick thinking of the farmer to call us out meant Charlie could do a straight-forward tail amputation above the wound on non-infected, non-swollen tissue!
๐ŸฉนThe bandage will be changed after 3 days and she will continue on pain relief for this time.

A great response to our lambing benchmarking for this year as part of the sheep discussion group. 25 farmers submitted their data which allowed for good comparison at our recent post-lambing meeting. Benchmarking is a great way to compare performance on your flock each year but also compare against other similar flocks and see if there are any ways to improve.

- Tested barren ewes from 10 flocks and found 50% of these positive with no bought in animals or vaccination history
- Found 1 flock with very low iodine levels and implemented a supplementation programme for the upcoming year
