Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a First Aid for Feet training course at Myerscough Farms with the Level 3 Agricultural students.

First Aid for Feet is part of a wider programme of hoof trimming and treatment courses developed by the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) and the Cattle Hoof Care Standards Board (CHCSB). Delivered by an experienced vet-trimmer instructor team, the course offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring students gain a thorough understanding of best practices in foot care.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn from experts and deepen their skills in cattle hoof health—a critical aspect of livestock management.

If you are interested in attending one of our First Aid For Feet Training courses, please give us a call.

🐮 A Friday full of red heads! 🐮
Becca was called out to see this lovely heifer who was struggling with a twisted uterus. After a careful roll and successful untwist, her calf was safely delivered—slowly but surely. A happy ending and a brilliant way to kick off the weekend! 🙌🌞

In response to the rising number of foot and mouth disease (FMD) cases across Europe, the Government has increased the risk of the disease entering the UK to ‘medium’. As a result, international travellers are no longer allowed to bring meat or dairy products from cattle, sheep, goat, and pigs from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use. Trade of wholesale products with Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria is also currently restricted.

While the disease is not currently in the UK, we continue to encourage good biosecurity with a particular focus on people, shared equipment, and movement of animals. Please speak to your vet or give the practice a call if you have any concerns or would like to review your biosecurity plan.

What will affect the spread of BTV (Bluetongue Virus) in the UK?

It is possible to move infected animals at any time. However, significant factors in the spread of the disease is temperature during the active vector season (normally March-September), wind direction, and the proximity and density of neighbouring farms.

For up to date BTV information, Ruminant Health and Welfare have a brilliant resource which you can find here: https://ruminanthw.org.uk/bluetongue-virus/

From the 31st March, Phase three of the National Johne’s Management Plan (NJMP) was introduced. The changes are not huge, and the focus is still on risk management and the implementation of an appropriate control strategy. The main changes are:
An Average Test Value (ATV) must be generated for each herd
A 60-cow random screen is now required to generate an ATV (previously 30)
A target of 5.5 ATV has been brought in with the aim to achieve this by 2030

Your vet will be able to discuss this with you further and update you on the changes, so if in doubt, please give the practice a call.

Some of the vaccines for Bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) are out of stock, so make sure that you have popped your name on the waiting list.
