🚨 Rat bait is one of the most common toxins we treat in dogs and cats — and it’s deadly.
Whether it’s a baited shed or a curious pup in the paddock, ingestion can be fatal without fast treatment.

🐶🐱 Even tiny amounts of bait can cause:
🩸 Internal bleeding
🤢 Vomiting
😴 Weakness or collapse
⚠️ Signs may not appear for days after ingestion — but by then, it can be too late.

💡 Common exposure risks we see:
– Dogs eating bait blocks directly
– Cats or dogs eating poisoned rodents
– Pets rummaging through sheds or bins

🩺 What to do:
✅ If you suspect bait exposure, don’t wait — call us immediately
✅ Never induce vomiting without vet advice
✅ Bring the bait box or packaging if possible for ingredient ID

A very hectic few weeks for our vets - surgeries, calvings/caesareans, sore eyes, wounds, orthodontics and reproduction in many species - Guinea pigs, cows, horses, dogs and cats.

Say hello to Jazz — one seriously tough farm dog 💪

Jazz's owner found her in the yard with a large, open chest wound and air sucking into her thorax — a sign of an open pneumothorax (yep, that’s as serious as it sounds).

🚗 Jazz was immediately rushed to us - on arrival she was dull but stable, with blood loss and rapid breathing. Thankfully her left lung was still inflated and we initiated shock treatment straight away.

🛠️ What we did:
✔️ IV fluids and pain relief
✔️ Wound flushed and surgically repaired
✔️ Thoracic drain placed to remove air and fluid from the chest cavity
✔️ Supported on an automatic ventilator during surgery
✔️ Monitored closely with oxygen therapy, multiple blood tests and removal of excess chest fluid

Over the next few days Jazz stayed brave through:
📉 Daily fluids
💊 Daily medications
💤 Plenty of naps and head pats

✨ And guess what? Jazz is now home — tail wagging, appetite back and breathing beautifully.

Her story is a reminder that quick action, good medicine, and a whole lot of care can turn scary into strong 💚

🛑 Think bones are a treat? Think again.
We see it far too often — dogs with broken teeth, throat injuries, or worse… bowel blockages from bones gone wrong.
🔍 From a vet’s perspective:
🚫 Cooked bones can splinter and pierce the gut
🚫 Raw bones carry bacteria like salmonella
🚫 Large marrow bones can crack teeth

❤️ If you must give a bone:
✅ Make sure it's raw, big enough NOT to swallow, and supervised at all times
✅ Limit chewing time
✅ NEVER give cooked bones, especially chicken or pork

A chew shouldn’t cost you a vet visit.

💡 Did you know your dog or cat could pass intestinal worms to your children?
🛑 Some parasites are zoonotic — meaning they can spread from animals to humans.

This is especially risky in young kids who play on the ground or around animals.

Yesterday we celebrated the brightest, bubbliest, most chicken-loving, Labrador-obsessed legend in the clinic! 💛 Whether she’s running (around) the floor like a boss, teaching with endless patience, or making us laugh with her quirky energy and infectious smile—she keeps us all going.

📚 Always ready to share her knowledge
🧠 Mostly organised (we won’t talk about the paperwork 😅)
🌈 Full of beans and positivity
🐓 A true chicken mum
🐶 And the biggest Labrador fan we know!
