Why Do Some Hens Eat Their Own Eggs?๐ฅ
Itโs more common than youโd think โ and usually, itโs not bad behaviour, just a sign that somethingโs missing or needs adjusting in the coop.
Hereโs what can cause it ๐
๐ธ Curiosity or Accidental Breaks โ A hen pecks at a cracked egg, realises it tastes good, and soon it becomes a habit.
๐ธ Calcium Deficiency โ If their diet is low in calcium, hens may eat eggs to get that extra boost their bodies are craving.
๐ธ Protein Deficiency โ They instinctively look for extra protein and find it in the egg contents.
๐ธ Boredom or Overcrowding โ When hens are stressed or bored, pecking eggs can become a way to pass time.
โจ How to Prevent It:
โ
Make sure theyโre getting plenty of calcium (crushed oyster shell or shell grit).
โ
Offer a balanced layer feed rich in protein.
โ
Collect eggs frequently to remove temptation.
โ
Keep nesting boxes dark, quiet, and comfortable so hens feel secure.
โ
If itโs already started, try ceramic or fake eggs โ theyโll peck and lose interest when nothing happens.
With the right diet and setup, most hens stop the habit quickly! ๐๐ฃ
