Bufo (Cane) Toad Season Is Here
Palm Beach County pet parents, summer means Bufo toad season is back. With Florida’s heat, humidity, and frequent rainstorms, Bufo (Cane) toads become much more active especially in our yards and neighborhoods.
These invasive toads may look harmless, but they release a powerful toxin that can become life-threatening to dogs and cats within minutes after licking, biting, or mouthing one.
At Alma Vet Connection, we want to help keep your pets safe. Here are a few ways to prevent Bufo toad exposure:
🔦 Always bring a flashlight when letting your pets outside after dark.
🌙 Be extra cautious at dusk, overnight, and after rainstorms this is when Bufo toads are most active.
🏡 Check your backyard before letting your pets outside to play or potty.
🐕 Keep dogs on a leash during evening walks and discourage them from investigating wildlife.
Signs of Bufo toxin exposure may include:
• Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Bright red gums
• Pawing at the mouth
• Vomiting
• Stumbling, weakness, or disorientation
• Tremors or seizures
If your pet comes into contact with a Bufo toad:
💧 Rinse their mouth immediately with running water while keeping their head pointed downward.
