Equine head shaking syndrome (EHSS) is a serious condition involving neurological pain from the trigeminal nerve. It can be seasonal and often indicated by persistent shaking of head at rest or under tack, pressing of the face against objects, seeking dark or shaded areas, rubbing or striking at the nose. In humans it can be a sharp lightning sensation of pain or a burning aching persistant sensation across the face.
It is important to differentiate EHSS from head tossing. Head tossing usually occurs due to physical pain and will not be present in all situations. Most common under tack.
EHSS is diagnosed by trigeminal nerve blocks or process of elimination. Seasonal allergies and head/body pain can be two common differential diagnosis.

Good News! Electro acupuncture has been known to help eliminate symptoms of head shaking and keep horses comfortable for extended periods of time!
I have 2 cases under my belt and so far they are doing great!!
