We get it, you love your dog SO much and they get so excited about treats and it becomes really tempting to keep giving them more. But giving them too many treats is unhealthy! So, while it started as an expression of love and something you wanted to do to make them happy ,too many treats can quickly backfire and make them sick! We know it can be tough and oh so tempting, but we promise your pets will be happier and healthier if they only get treats in moderation! If you have questions about your petโs health or how many treats are appropriate for their diet please talk to us! The best way to show your pet you love them is to keep them healthy! ๐ค๐พ๐

Tomorrow is chocolate day โฆ And since Valentineโs Day is just around the corner, we figured weโd take this opportunity to remind you that chocolate is toxic to pets, especially dark chocolate!! ๐ซ Both the theobromine and the caffeine in chocolate make it toxic to pets! Please help keep the pets that you love far away from your Valentineโs Day (or other) chocolate treats!! ๐พ๐
Meet Brody!! He doesnโt know heโs not people and is the sweetest pitipotamous!! (Yes, thatโs a technical vet term ๐) Fun fact: he used to live in Texas and was terrorized by a Pygmy goat named Jose! We have VERY exciting news!!! ๐๐ Our CRPC family is growing!!! ๐ฅฐ Please join us in welcoming Dr. Karyn Carlson!! ๐คฉ๐ ๐พ๐
Dr. Karyn Carlson is a Tucson native, a Wildcat alum (B.S. in Family Studies and Human Development), and a graduate of Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She followed her veterinary degree with a Masters in shelter medicine from the University of Florida and a small animal general rotating internship at Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson.
She has focused mostly on shelter and emergency medicine, working mostly in Arizona, but also in Texas and Utah. She looks forward to making long-lasting relationships with pets and their families, not something she has had the privilege of in her past practice areas. Additionally, she has completed Fear-Free Certification training and looks forward to bringing her interest in behavior to private practice.
Outside her typical work week, Dr. Carlson enjoys participating in international spay/neuter campaigns, providing volunteer veterinary care for animals on Native American reservations, leading the Tucson chapter of The Street Dog Coalition, attending Orangetheory Fitness, craft beer drinking, hiking, and spending time with her family of dogs and a horse.
๐ถ Itโs the year of the tiger
Itโs the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rivals
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And heโs watching us all with the eye of the tiger ๐ถ
Just us? Lol
Happy lunar new year!! ๐

And our final dog walk tip: donโt hit the ground running (pun intended!)! Most of us wouldnโt do well if we ran a marathon without training. Your pet is the same way! Too much of a good thing too quickly can be bad. So, ease into the length (and speed) of your walks~ for both of you. If your dog gets tired they arenโt being lazy! They probably need a break! Know the signs of heat exhaustion and keep an eye on your dog. Having fresh drinking water on your walk is always a good idea! And remember to communicate with other dog owners about whether your dog likes other dogs and/or likes being pet. Remember that walks are supposed to be both fun and exercise (that goes for humans too)! So, if they stop being fun, re-evaluate whether the walk is still benefiting your dog โฆand find ways to get back to a positive place! Daily walks are such a necessity for a healthy happy dog (and some might argue they promote the same for their humans! ๐ค)! Happy walking! ๐พ๐
When youโre this cute do you even need a caption!? ๐คฉ๐พ๐
Since itโs walk your dog month, we wanted to offer the reminder that going for a walk isnโt just a physical activity for your dog! Itโs actually enriching for them to sniff different smells too! We love the phrase reading dog pee mail because it helps people remember that dogs collect and transmit more information than we do through their olfactory senses, so itโs important for them to have the opportunity to โreadโ some new smells. Of course, you also want your dog to focus and go on a walk~ but a few pee mail breaks, within reason, are healthy too! ๐พ๐
Meet Houdini! He has the best purr motor ever and was truly a gentleman for his visit!! ๐ป๐บ๐พ๐ Happy Fri yay!! ๐

February is Feline Health Month! ๐ฑ Is your cat due for a visit?๐ฝ Most cats need annual vaccines in addition to a checkup. We don't use the same vaccines that are made for dogs -- we use special vaccines that don't contain an adjuvant and are much safer for cats!๐ป๐ป Don't know the difference? Please ask Dr. Talkington or Dr. Brown and they would be happy to explain! Book an appointment for your feline friend online at www.continentalranchpetclinic.com or call us (520) 744-3850.
Let's talk about Heartworm disease! Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes and we have seen more dogs test positive this year. This short video explains how heartworms infect our dogs, how we can test for them, and how we can treat for them. Heartworm preventative is affordable and much less expensive than treating for this potentially devastating disease! Schedule an appointment to get your pup tested and started on preventative!
