🩹 It is Medicine Monday! And it is time to talk about the fluff -we mean Silver Sulfadiazine Cream (SSD). So let's dive right into this soothing cream that is used in both human and veterinary medicine.

🔷 What is SSD?

SSD is a water-miscible topical medication belonging to the group of medications known as sulfonamide antibiotics. A sulfonamide antibiotic is a class of synthetic medication containing sulfur. SSD is a heavy metal topical agent. It has antibacterial and even some antifungal properties. SSD is commonly used to prevent, manage, and treat burn wound infections. It is available with a prescription. SSD has been FDA approved since 1973.

💙 SSD is considered extremely safe. However, those with known sulfa allergies may want to avoid handling this topical medication. We always recommend wearing gloves when applying medications to wounds or burns.

🔷 Did you know?

Studies have shown that SSD is fungicidal and is an off-label therapeutic option for equine keratomycosis. Equine keratomycosis is a corneal ulcer that has become infected with fungal organisms.

🛑 DO NOT go applying SSD to an eye without a diagnosis and treatment plan from a veterinarian. Remember, eyes are ALWAYS an emergency.

🔷 Wounds can be complicated when it comes to healing and infection. Not all wound products are created equally and may be detrimental to the wound healing process. We recommend speaking with your veterinarian before “slathering” on a topical medication to a wound.
