Did You Know?! 🤔

“Guinea pigs have 20 teeth, including four incisors (front teeth), four premolars, and 12 molars. Their teeth are classified as ‘aradicular hypsodont,’ which is a fancy way of saying they have high crowns and open roots that grow continuously throughout their lives, says Walter Merker” ().

What should guinea pig teeth look like?

“The visible crown of a guinea pig’s teeth should be white, and the pre-molars and molars along the lower jaw should be angled slightly inward, while the teeth on the upper jaw are angled slightly outward, Dr. Merker explains. Your vet can teach you more about what looks normal for your pig.”

Our avian companions bring so much joy into our lives; however, as their caretakers, it’s crucial to understand that birds possess a unique physiology that makes them particularly sensitive to environmental toxins, both ingested and airborne.

If you have a bird at home or are considering getting one, avoid the following items:
- Fruit Pits
- Avacados
- Macadamia Nuts
- Alcohol
- Oven Cleaners
- Teflon
- Scented Products
- Pothos House Plant
- Plants with Oxalic Acid

If you suspect your bird has ingested or inhaled something listed above or simply have questions about avian care — call us: (520) 877-2626

In the second part of our Desert Dangers in May series, we’re focusing on how to protect your pets from Tucson vegetation.

Jumping Cholla’s barbs can easily cling to fur and can be very difficult to remove completely.
Many dogs are drawn to the sweet taste of Mesquite pods; however, they are very tough to digest and can lead to obstruction!
Much needed rains also bring a surprising amount of mushrooms. Any wild mushroom your pet ingests should be treated as potentially toxic.
Foxtails (or Grass Awns) are very innocuous but are a major problem for pets as they are easily lodged in hard-to-find-places like in between toes.
We dive into how to be on the lookout for the above, how to protect your pet family, and what to do for each on our blog “OG Vets.”
