Meet Charlie, a scruffalufagus of a wiry doodle who thought a corn cob looked like a tasty snack.

🌽😅 Spoiler: it wasn’t.

Thankfully, her quick-thinking humans brought her in right away. We safely induced vomiting, and clear radiographs confirmed there was no obstruction. 🙌 That meant no surgery — just some rest, belly rubs, and a little chat about better snack choices. 🐶💚

👉 Ingesting foreign objects is one of the most common emergencies we see. From socks to skewers to corn cobs, pets get curious — and it can get serious, fast. Never assume it’s “no big deal.” Early intervention is the best medicine.

We are here for you and your four-legged troublemakers, 24/7.

Trying to beat the heat? Here’s something every pet parent should know.

We know you and your pets are looking for ways to cool off this summer—but beware of blue-green algae.

This toxic algae often grows in ponds, lakes, and still water during warm weather and can look like green paint or scum. Just a few licks or a quick swim in contaminated water can lead to severe illness—or even be fatal—for pets.

⚠️ To stay safe:
✔️ Avoid letting your pet drink or swim in stagnant or discolored water.
✔️ Rinse them off if they’ve been in natural water sources.
✔️ If exposure is suspected, seek emergency veterinary care right away.

When in doubt, stay out. We’re here if you need us.

📣 THIS IS OUR WHY ❤️‍🩹🐾

Meet DJ, the bounciest, happiest, rolliest little Vizsla puppy you’ll ever see — and one of the toughest cookies we've had the privilege of caring for.

DJ came to us after being hit by a car, suffering from head trauma and pulmonary contusions that landed him in the hospital for several days on oxygen support. 💔

But wow, did this little guy rally. 💪🏽✨

Thanks to quick intervention, round-the-clock care, and the unshakable love of his incredible parents, DJ made it through those scary first days. After discharge, he went home with the same spunky spirit (and those amazing squishy puppy rolls) — and hasn’t stopped bouncing since. 🐶💨

Today, he visited us for recheck chest radiographs, and his lungs are healing beautifully. His parents have been doing a TON of rehab work with him, and he couldn’t ask for a better care team. 🙌💙 Major kudos to them for their dedication, love, and tireless efforts to give DJ the best shot at a full recovery.

Arnie, a Lagotto Romagnolo, presented to the ER with severe ear pain. A sedated otoscopic exam revealed multiple foxtails lodged in his ear canal—OUCH! 😬

Thankfully, Dr. Stankowiak was able to remove them, and Arnie woke up feeling SO much better.

🖤🐾Coho the Lab, with nose to the ground,
Sniffed up some foxtails, not the best find around!

We scoped his snout and peeked in his ear,
Just some inflammation, nothing severe.

With meds for his ears and a wagging tail,
This best boy’s ready to hit the trail! 🖤🐾

As we transition from summer to work, school, and daily routines, it’s easy to overlook everyday items that can be harmful—or even deadly—to our pets. In this video, our team shares some of the most common household toxins for cats and dogs, from food items, cleaning products, medications, and more.

Tip for pet parents:
Keep all hazardous items stored securely and out of reach, especially during busy mornings or after-school routines.

⚠️ If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic:
• Stay calm.
• Remove access to the substance.
• Call the ASPCA Pet Poison Helpline (888) 426-4435 & visit your nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

🌊 AHOY, MATEYS! 🌊

Beluga (aka Baloo) hit some rough seas with a bout of canine seasickness (aka GI upset) 🤢⚓️, but our crew helped get this good boy’s belly back on course. 🫡

Keep your eyes on the horizon—you just might spot this seafaring snoot riding shotgun on a paddleboard with his human! 🏄‍♂️🐾

Drop a 🐳 if you'd boop the snoot and wish Captain Beluga calm tummies and clear skies ahead!

Look who’s back at it again… it’s Looney Tunes herself, Miss Luna! 🌀🐾

This sweet senior pittie has quite the taste for trouble—and by “trouble,” we mean non-edible household items. This time? Socks and a corn cob.

Luna’s a frequent flyer here at ECEC, but thankfully, she always lands safely thanks to her stellar care team.

Here she is giving her signature side-eye to Dr. Fukuzato, our fearless medical director, just before discharge. (Pretty sure she’s already plotting her next snack attack.) 😅

Snake Season is Here—Stay Alert, Pet Parents!

Snakes can be found in backyards, parks, hiking trails, and even near water sources. Peak activity occurs during warmer months, especially at dawn and dusk. Pets are often bitten on the face or legs while investigating tall grass, brush, or hidden crevices.

To help prevent bites:
✔️ Keep pets on a leash during walks.
✔️ Avoid tall grass, rocky areas, and dunes.
✔️ Don’t let pets explore under logs or brush piles.

🚨 If you suspect your pet has been bitten:
• Look for sudden swelling, pain, or bleeding.
• Avoid handling the bite area.
• Keep your pet calm and carry them if possible.
• Head to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital right away.

Help Animals Impacted by the Texas Flooding 🐾💙

The recent flooding in Texas has displaced countless families and their pets. Kerrville Pets Alive is working tirelessly to rescue, shelter, reunite, and care for animals affected by this disaster — but they can’t do it alone.

We’ve set up a fundraiser through our Instagram and pages, and 100% of the funds will go directly to Kerrville Pets Alive to help provide food, medical care, and safe shelter for pets in crisis.

To amplify your impact, Lakefield Veterinary Group will match donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. Your gift will go twice as far to help animals who need us most. Please share!

🎆 Fireworks can be fun for us — but scary for our pets! Here are five quick tips to help keep your furry family members safe and calm this Fourth of July:
• Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip info are up to date
• Take them for a long walk or play session during the day
• Double-check that your yard and fence are secure
• Turn on the TV or radio to help drown out the fireworks noise
• Stay home if you can — your comfort matters most to them

A little planning goes a long way. Wishing you and your pets a safe, relaxing holiday — enjoy the BBQs, fireworks (from a distance!), and time with family and friends! 🇺🇸🌭
