Did you know that there's a technical term for the zoomies? Zoomies, or frenetic random activity periods (FARPS), have been theorized to allow animals to relieve stress, let out stored up energy, and handle excitement and play.

Does your pup get the zoomies often? 💨

While the best way to treat anxiety is to talk to your veterinarian, you can consider trying desensitization training. By slowly introducing your dog to the source of anxiety in small doses and rewarding positive behavior, you may find this method possible in helping to manage your dog's anxiety. 🐾

Interesting research.

Broken Teeth Break Our Hearts

PET OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL

This month Clover has agreed to share her story. Unfortunately she broke an important tooth by chewing on the wrong item and the tooth had to be extracted. She wants you to know how to avoid this painful situation.
You can read her story on our blog: https://hhvh.net/2022/04/30/broken-teeth-break-our-hearts/

Taking care of your pet's teeth is an important part of keeping them healthy and happy. Brushing daily and selecting appropriate chew toys is something every pet owner should be doing. Dogs and cats may choose to chew on many items, but that doesn't mean the items are all safe. This article talks ab...

🎉 Clover is our PET OF THE MONTH for April 🎉

This lovely, silly, Labradoodle has won the hearts of her family and our hospital team. Here are some insights shared by her family....

Clover's Likes
--riding in the car with her paw on the arm rest and her nose sticking out of an open window
--napping on comfy furniture (especially along the top of a couch like a cat)
--adventures with the family
--other doodles

Clover's Dislikes
--crows and squirrels in her backyard
--baths
--unfiltered tap water to drink

A funny story:
When the pandemic started, we were not able to get together to celebrate extended family birthdays like we usually do, so we started making themed birthday video messages. Clover was a good sport and allowed us to dress her up and she quickly became our family's favorite movie star. Her various roles included a Norwegian gnome, a jazz musician, Ariel from the Little Mermaid and a magical creature from Harry Potter.

It’s not just physicians and nurses. Veterinarians are burning out too

Our industry has been challenged. At HHVH we are doing the best we can thanks to some very dedicated employees. However, the pandemic and working with fewer team members than we need for over two years has stretched us thin.
We appreciate the care and understanding that many of you have sent our way. Thank you. We enjoy helping your pets and look forward to a time we can all be together again.

Empathy overload and compassion fatigue contribute to the mental health woes of veterinarians, with their workload increased by pet adoptions during the pandemic.

We welcome Dr, RAVNEET KAUR back to Hawthorne Hills Veterinary Hospital. She worked for us previously as an assistant while she was completing her requirements to become a licensed veterinarian in the United States. She spent time working for another veterinary facility, then took a break to have a child. She is now ready to be back at work two afternoons a week and looks forward to meeting your pets. We are pleased to have her join our team. 🩺🎉👩‍⚕️

*** PET OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH ***
We are profiling Reggie this month. He had a small red lesion on his muzzle when he returned from boarding. The sore didn't go away which prompted medical intervention. Thank you to his owners for letting us share his story. You can read more on our blog - skin lesions can be more than skin deep.

Say HELLO to REGGIE, our Pet of the Month for March
Here are some fun facts and photos of Reggie shared by his owners.
LIKES:
He loves sleeping under the covers in bed, ice cream and "nosework," where he sniffs out treats we've hidden.

DISLIKES:
Vegetables, being away from his people, and fireworks.

Here are several stories -
1. He never destroys items, but when we were planning our first vacation after we got him--a trip to French Polynesia--he pulled the guidebook I was using to plan the trip out from a stack of other books and shredded it.
2. When I leave the house, Reggie busies himself by gently taking clothes out of my closet, one by one, and bringing them into the living room.
3. He has somehow trained us to give him not one but two cookies each morning just for getting out of bed.

Random fun fact: He was the spokesdog for the 2021 Furry 5K Seattle Animal Shelter benefit, and he appeared on the race t-shirts and other promotional materials.

We saw Reggie because he had a skin abrasion on his face that ended up being a bit more significant. You can read his story on our hospital blog.

Here's more about our Pet of the Month Pippa.
Likes:
1. Snuggling on laps
2. Chasing the feather on her toy
3. Laying by the fire
Dislikes:
1. Having to wait for feather toy playing when her brother is playing
2. Sudden noises or movements. Still a little shy
3. Sharing the bed with the family dog

Funny memory: Given she is a recent rescue, I haven’t had her very long but the funny memory was when she was being handed over to me (literally) from the family I rescued her from, she said “do let me know if she is pregnant, we have other cats in the house and it’s possible.” I was surprised by the comment! Four weeks or so of having her I noticed her nipples were pronounced and pink. After a quick Google search, I found that is an early sign of pregnancy. So, I knew it was a real possibility.

Surprise Kittens!

💕🐈 PET OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY 🐈💕

We are celebrating Pippa who, along with her littermate Bear, was recently adopted by a long term client. Not only did the pet owner get two healthy 8 month old young kittens, she found out Pippa was also pregnant! Congratulations to our client for taking on more than you bargained for. Read more on our blog: https://hhvh.net/2022/02/28/surprise-kittens/

Female cats can go into heat as early as 5-6 months of age. If they have not been spayed, they are at risk of getting pregnant if they are housed with other intact cats including litter mates.

BABY CANINE TEETH – What Happens When They Stay Too Long, or Point in the Wrong Direction?

PETS OF THE MONTH for JANUARY

This month we are profiling three dogs who all had issues with baby teeth. Their owners were gracious enough to share their stories so other pet owners can learn from their experiences. You can read about Shasta, Frankie and Murphy on our blog: https://hhvh.net/2022/01/30/baby-canine-teeth-what-happens-when-they-stay-too-long-or-point-in-the-wrong-direction/

Deciduous or baby teeth can sometimes be retained and push the adult tooth into the wrong position. Ball therapy is one technique to try and help the developing teeth to move. However, extracting the baby tooth may be essential to helping teeth get back into their proper alignment. Dental radiograph...

🎉JANUARY PETS OF THE MONTH 🎉
Baby teeth can pose a problem when they don't fall out on time. Shasta, Frankie & Murphy all had issues, but with proper treatment they are all doing great. Here's some fun facts about these three youngsters.

SHASTA:
3 likes: treats, belly rubs and playing keep away.
3 dislikes: getting in and out of the car, not being in the middle of the action and going outside in the rain.

Fun Story: Shasta loves to play with other dogs. Just a week after we brought her home we took her to our family cabin with my parents’ and brother’s one year old Labradors. Despite being significantly smaller than the other two, she spent the week racing around after them on the lawn and alternating between being right in the middle of their wrestling and seeking the cover of lawn chairs when she recognized she was outmatched. It was so much fun to watch and has meant she loves making new friends!

FRANKIE:
3 Likes: Frankie absolutely loves people, especially children! She is exceptionally smart, and it is so fun to teach her new tricks. She is very communicative! She lets us know when she wants to go out or play, and will make sounds of delight when we give her a particularly good treat

3 Dislikes: She is very communicative!!! She demands that we take her out or play or give her a treat. She hogs the whole bed like she owns the place. She is so cute that it makes it difficult to get work done, because we just want to pet her all day!

A Funny Memory: Frankie loves to do yoga with me! She crawls under me when I do Downward Dog, but then has to run away when it's time to do Upward Facing Dog. Her favorite is to sleep right next to my face when it's time for the final Shavasana. She's a natural yogi.

MURPHY:
3 Likes: Cuddles, Peanut Butter, mud puddles.
3 Dislikes: Mom cleaning his ears & the car.

A funny story: Everyday Murphy makes loud whooping noises (like Curly from the 3
stooges) in his sleep. We crack up every time. Sometimes he gets loud enough to wake himself up from a deep nap. Probably dreaming about catching a squirrel. ;)

Two of our clients, who are friends, spend time together with their dogs. Wrigley (on the right) regularly goes hiking. Hazel, was recently adopted. She and Wrigley have been hanging out together. Wrigley’s owner thought we might enjoy this series of pics from December (before the snow) and gave us permission to share with you.

Hazel loves Wrigley. Wrigley must really like her, too, because he typically snaps at any dog that gets in his face. And this was only their second outing together.

ADAM is our PET of the MONTH for DECEMBER!

Adam has been a patient of Hawthorne Hills Veterinary Hospital since 2009. The past 12-18 months have been hard on him and as a senior dog he was gaining weight and having progressive issues with mobility. COVID created some challenges for Adam and his owners; however, with an effective medical plan, Adam has a new lease on life and is doing really well. Thanks to his owners for sharing Adam's story with other pet owners.

Here's some of his likes and dislikes, and a funny story from his owners.
ADAM’S LIKES
Chest rubs
Dogs of any size
Smelling things on his walks

ADAM’S DISLIKES
Baths
Nail Trimmings
Being left alone!

A FUNNY STORY
We were preparing a delicious dinner of salad topped with salmon and had just finished setting out one of the plates on a fairly low-lying table and returned to the kitchen to prepare the second plate, When, we turned back, no more than 20 seconds later, the salmon had vanished! We know Adam somehow managed not just to eat the salmon but to do it without disturbing the salad and not leaving a single trace or morsel of salmon. How did he do it? In the blink of an eye, such a low key and retiring guy.

We have sent two pictures of Adam when he was just 1 year old and two pictures of him now at 13. Unfortunately, we don’t have good pictures of him just prior to his diet but the change has been awe-inspiring. He has been much more activated and energetic after having sunk into an all-time low of just lying around sleeping. We’ll have to be careful and watch our salmon now.
