Meet River, an energetic Springer Spaniel who lives life exactly the way a Springer should—running, playing, and, of course... **sniffing absolutely everything**.

One afternoon, River was happily racing through a field of tall grass when something unexpected happened. She came back sneezing, and for about 20 minutes, those sneezes contained blood. Although the bleeding stopped on its own, the sneezing didn't. Each morning, and occasionally throughout the day, River would have sneezing fits, spraying tiny droplets with each sneeze. She wasn't acting sick otherwise—her appetite, energy, and personality were all completely normal. After several days of nasal drops, the sneezing seemed to improve slightly, but it still wasn't gone.

Knowing something wasn't quite right, River's owner understood that the next step required more than a routine examination. After searching for advanced options, they discovered that **River Valley Veterinary Service offers rhinoscopy**, a specialized procedure that isn't available at every veterinary hospital.

So, what is a rhinoscopy?

Think of it as a tiny camera for the nose. While a patient is comfortably under anesthesia, a veterinarian carefully guides a small, flexible camera into the nasal passages to look for problems that can't be seen from the outside. It allows us to identify things like grass awns and other foreign material, inflammation, polyps, fungal infections, or even masses—all without making an incision.

In River's case, the answer quickly became clear. During her rhinoscopy, our team discovered a **6 cm stick lodged deep within her right nasal passage**. Using a specialized biopsy instrument, we were able to gently grasp and remove the stick without the need for surgery.

Just imagine trying to breathe with a 6 cm stick stuck in your nose! It's no wonder River couldn't stop sneezing.

Almost immediately after the procedure, River was feeling so much better. With the obstruction gone, she could finally breathe comfortably again—and get back to the things she loves most: running, playing, and enthusiastically sniffing every new adventure.

River's story is a wonderful reminder that persistent symptoms often have an underlying cause that can't be seen with the naked eye. Rhinoscopy is just one example of the advanced diagnostic tools available at River Valley Veterinary Service. From advanced imaging and minimally invasive procedures to specialized endoscopy, our team has access to technology that helps us diagnose challenging cases more quickly and accurately. Rather than guessing, these tools allow us to find answers, provide targeted treatment, and help pets like River get back to feeling their very best.

Blue-green algae isn't actually algae—it's bacteria.
If the water looks like pea soup, spilled green paint, or has floating green scum, keep pets (and people) out.
If your dog swims in suspicious water, rinse them off immediately to prevent grooming-related ingestion, and contact your veterinarian if they show any signs of illness. The Minnesota Department of Health's advice is simple: "When in doubt, best keep out."
