Today and tomorrow will have humidity and heat that can be dangerous for dogs. Keep the activity low with frequent shade and water breaks. Heat and humidity are especially dangerous for the short nose breeds and dogs with heart or lung disease. So take care of your dog and yourself over the next few days and prevent heatstroke, which can be deadly in a matter of minutes!

While celebrating Easter on Sunday, use caution with the pets. Lilies, especially the Easter lilies, can cause kidney failure in cats. Just a nibble of the leaves, petals or even the pollen can cause permanent damage to feline kidneys.

The plastic fake Easter grass is another enticement for cats that can end up in a fatal situation. The string-like nature of the fake grass in Easter baskets is enticing to cats and can end up obstructing or cutting into their intestines.

Dogs tend to eat many of the treats if they have the opportunity, and the chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors and heart problems. Xylitol, the artificial sweetner, can cause profound drops in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs. The wrappers on candies can also cause intestinal obstructions if enough are consumed.

Real carrots can be a substitution for the human candy on the Easter holiday for your canine friend.

You do need to be vigilant about the health of your chickens, especially with the avian influenza outbreak that devastated Minnesota's poultry flocks last year. A new outbreak has occured in Indiana. Use extreme care to keep your birds healthy. The link has good tips to make sure your flock won't be ground zero for a major outbreak of disease.

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) works to keep avian influenza (AI), a serious poultry disease, from becoming established in the U.S. poultry population.
