Meet one of our star patients, Nova! 💫

Nova was born with a heart defect called Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia. This condition causes Nova’s heart to pump insufficiently, leading to low blood oxygen. In response to this, her body pumps out excess red blood cells - to try to compensate for the decreased blood oxygen. With too many red blood cells, the blood becomes thick - decreasing blood flow to the body & increasing the risk of blood clots.

In order to prevent this & improve circulation, Nova visits our skilled technicians at American Animal Hospital routinely for blood collection - sometimes in large volumes ranging from 200-400ml in one day!

Collecting these large volumes is no easy task, but Nova is a stellar patient who always sits like a professional for her blood draws. She only asks for some loving attention & maybe a few snacks in return for her endless cooperation.

We are so thankful that Nova’s parents chose our hospital to be part of her healthcare journey. Nova’s cheerful personality, bravery, & resilience is an inspiration to us all at AAH.

What is Rally? Rally is a dog sport where a handler and dog team navigates a course of signs, each providing instructions for a specific skill to be performed, such as sits, stays, and weaves. It is a positive, teamwork-focused activity that builds a strong bond, improves communication, and reinforces basic manners in a fun, engaging way for both the dog and the handler.

🩺🐾 Brotherly Love on Surgery Day 🐾🩺

These two sweet brothers came in today for their neuter surgeries. While it can be a big day for any pet, they found comfort in the best way possible—by snuggling up together afterward. ❤️

Neutering not only helps prevent unwanted litters but also supports long-term health and reduces certain behavioral issues. And as you can see, recovery is always a little easier with a cuddle buddy by your side.

Stormy was a stray rescue and she couldn't be more sweet. Her paw-rents brought her in to have a little cyst evaluated by Dr. Reilly! A little yummy goodness on the lickmat and it made for a fearfree stress-less visit! Great job team!

Clean ears make for a happy pup! This sweet baby enjoyed Ada cleaning out the gunk. 🐾💓
Did you know that ear infections can be caused by yeast and bacteria? Yeast infections in ears can cause quite a bit of discomfort and do require prescription medications from a veterinarian. While cleaning your dogs ears may help short term, the problem usually returns. Allergies definitely can increase the frequency of those infections too. ⚕️🩺🐾🐕

🐾 Diabetes in Cats – What Pet Parents Should Know 🐾

Did you know cats can develop diabetes, just like people? 🐱💉 Here Jess is getting a small blood sample from the ear flap, which is much less stressful for the kitty and easily obtained.
Feline diabetes is most common in middle-aged to senior cats, especially those who are overweight. The condition occurs when a cat’s body doesn’t produce enough insulin—or doesn’t use it properly—leading to high blood sugar levels.

✨ Signs to Watch For:

Increased thirst and urination

Increased appetite with weight loss

Lethargy or weakness

Changes in coat quality

✨ Diagnosis & Care:
If diabetes is suspected, bloodwork and urinalysis are used to confirm. The good news is that with proper treatment—often insulin therapy, diet changes, and weight management—many cats can live long, happy, and healthy lives. Some even go into remission with early, consistent care!

✨ How You Can Help Your Cat:

Schedule regular veterinary checkups

Feed a balanced, vet-recommended diet (often high protein, low carb)

Maintain a healthy weight

Monitor for changes in behavior or habits

🐾 A Day in the Life of a Little Fighter 🐾

Meet our sweet pug friend, Ruby 💕. Today was a big day for this little one—she came in for a much-needed dental and bladder procedure. Dental health is just as important for pets as it is for people, and sometimes that means anesthesia and a careful cleaning to make sure they stay healthy and pain-free.

Our amazing veterinary team worked together to keep her safe, comfortable, and surrounded by love every step of the way. From monitoring vital signs to gently performing his procedure, every detail matters when it comes to caring for our furry family members.

She did wonderfully and is now resting peacefully, on her way to fresher breath, healthier gums, and a happier smile. 🦷✨
