Today marks one year. 365 days since tragedy struck at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis.
One year ago today, many people survived something they should never have to experience. In the 365 days since, they’ve had to find their path forward. It's different for each person, but this is Aletta's story (as told by her mom). We are honored to share it with you today.
"On August 27th, 2025, our family, our school, and our community were rocked by unimaginable violence.
Our daughter, Aletta, then just 8 years old and on her third day of third grade, was present at Annunciation Church during the mass shooting. Like every child, educator, family member, and community member affected, she began her own journey through grief, fear, anger, and healing.
In the months that followed, our once independent and fearless little girl struggled deeply. She was haunted by painful memories and frightening nightmares. Bedtime became a challenge, and she often woke in the middle of the night terrified, unable to find peace or comfort.
Aletta has always loved animals, especially small dogs she can hold in her arms. Knowing the comfort animals can provide, I reached out to our neighbor, Veronika, who volunteers with The Bond Between. I asked her to keep an eye out for a cuddly, small dog that might be a good fit for our family.
That very same day, Veronika sent us photos of Junie.
Aletta fell in love instantly with Junie's wild fur, oversized ears, and undeniable charm. On July 17, Junie officially joined our family, and from that day forward, she has brought joy, comfort, and purpose into Aletta's life.
Aletta loves caring for Junie, snuggling with her, and chasing her around the yard. But the most remarkable change has come at night. Junie's calming presence, steady heartbeat, and gentle kisses have helped Aletta find rest again. She sleeps more peacefully knowing Junie is by her side.
As is so often the case with animals, we may have adopted Junie, but the truth is that Junie rescued us."
Junie can't change what happened one year ago... but she can be there on Aletta's path forward 🤍
