Quick PSA for new puppy parents in the Twin Cities:

Your puppy's socialization window doesn't wait. Under 16 weeks, the brain is wide open to learning what's safe and normal. Social maturity doesn't arrive until 18 months to 2 years — so the real-world practice deepens all the way through adolescence.

Class teaches the skills. The world is where the learning lands.

We rounded up 10 Twin Cities stores that actively welcome dogs — Bachman's, HomeGoods, Scheels, Home Depot, Restoration Hardware, Patina, The Container Store, Ace Hardware, Blick Art, and Michaels. Some are beginner-friendly. Some are intermediate. Some require an empty puppy and a deep breath. 😅

Three ground rules before you go:

✓ Empty puppy first
✓ Watch body language — if your puppy looks worried, stop, support, connect, treat
✓ Skip these outings if your dog has shown any aggression. A private consult is the right next step.

While we're helping our clients understand their dogs , we make a lot of comparisons between dogs 🐕 and young human children. 👶

We KNOW that dogs are not the same as children. BUT. The similarities are much greater than the differences. Ignore for a second that dogs walk around on four legs and are covered in fur, and look at what we have in common:

💜 We are both mammals with complex central nervous systems that shape how we interact with the world around us. Oxytocin, dopamine, coritsol, adrenaline... it's all the same whether it's coursing through a dog's body or a human's.
💜 No two humans are exactly the same, just as no two dogs are exactly the same. Every individual has their own unique personality with differing likes, dislikes, and needs.
💜 We are both social creatures with a biological need for safety and connection. When we don't feel safe and supported, we experience both phsyical and mental health problems.
💜Both dogs and humans are shaped by nature AND nurture. Some traits we're born with, and some traits were caused by our upbringing. Our early experiences greatly influence who we become as adults.

These are all reasons why we believe dogs deserve more than old school obedience classes! Manners are important, but dogs are not robots or unfeeling stuffed animals. Their happiness matters to us. Their sense of safety matters to us. Their social lives matter to us. When you hear us comparing your dog to a toddler, it's only because we want you to see just how amazing your dog really is. 💜🐕🥰

If you feel like the fur always flies the most during stressful situations... you're not wrong!

A sudden flurry of dog hair is a common stress response in shedding dog breeds. If you're noticing an influx of hair floating through the air, paired with other stress signs such as panting, pacing, wide eyes, etc, that means it's time to step in and come to the rescue! 😮

What's not to love about blowing bubbles for dogs!?

🫧Easy? Check!
🫧No clean up? Check!
🫧Provides mental and physical enrichment? Check!
🫧Don't have to worry about added calories? Check!
🫧Low effort required from the human? Check!

The more ways we can enrich our dogs' lives, the happier they are. Give it a shot! We'd love to see pics of your pup's reaction to playing with bubbles. 🐕🫧😂

Who couldn't use a little more JOY in their life!? 🥳

Giving your dog opportunities to experience unbridled, tongue-flopping, ears-blowing-in-the-breeze joy isn't just about making your dog feel good: It helps YOU feel good too! Dogs who lead fulfilled, happy lives are so much easier to live with. (Plus, isn't it freeing to let go of boring adult stuff for a while and let your inner child come out to play?! Happiness is contagious!)

C'mon, let loose a little. Nobody lies on their deathbed lamenting that they had too much joy in their life. Chase that squirrel. Roll down the car windows. Jump off the dock. Find a warm beam of sunlight and bathe in it. Share an ice cream cone on a hot day. Seek out adventure in your own backyard. Whatever you and your pup do for fun, live it up. We're SO here for it.

Whenever we're asking our dogs to do anything, we want it to be achievable! Knowing the three categories of obedience behaviors helps us decide what is appropriate to ask of our dogs at any given time.

💜If your pup is amped up from a rollicking good play session, use those movement based behaviors! Let him wind down slowly rather than asking him to go from running 100 mph to lying stock-still in a down stay. 😵‍💫

💜If your pup is nervous about his environment and afraid for his own safety, it's not fair to ask him to make himself feel even more vulnerable by lying down, or worse, being stuck in a stay. If he's only a little nervous, catch his attention with some simple spins and twirls. If he's totally nervous, don't ask for anything at all! Emotional safety and support always comes first. 🥰

💜If your pup is a youngster, it's not realistic to ask for impulse control behaviors in a busy new environment. His brain is still growing and his full attention span is still coming online. These things take time and practice! As he develops, your pup will become more and more capable and you can ask for these challenging behaviors in more and more environments... until then, remind yourself that your dog is just a baby. 😉

No matter what, never ever EVER feel bad for taking your dog's feelings and unique circumstances into account. It's not a failure if you have to take a step back and go to an easier behavior. It's especially not a failure if you have to abort mission all together and get your dog out of a situation he isn't equipped to handle. Knowing your dog and being his hero are the true hallmarks of good trainers and loving pet parents. 💜

If your perfect puppy suddenly seems like a totally different dog, don't panic! Your lovable, good-natured baby is still in there, he's just drowning in hormones and teenage drama. 😱

To survive the "teenage" years:
⭐ Continue with training, but be realistic! If you have to make your games a little easier to win right now, that's totally okay. Keep rewarding all of the good behaviors you can. Make sure you're keeping things fun, and you're properly motivating your pup.
⭐ Know that this is a TOTALLY NORMAL thing that happens to everyone! Keep telling yourself that this too shall pass, and life with your pup will get easier again.
⭐ Continue offering plenty of exercise and enrichment to get those ya-yas out. It is SO much easier to live with a dog whose needs are being fulfilled by human-approved outlets.

Remember... you can do this! If you need extra help, hit us up. We got you. 😘
