At Lafayette Veterinary Care Center, we are proud to be the only veterinary hospital within a 60-mile radius offering a fully equipped, on-site blood bank.

This vital resource allows us to respond immediately when pets face life-threatening illness or injury requiring a blood or plasma transfusion.

🧬 Did you know?
Dogs and cats have blood types, just like humans. While dogs have at least 14 identified blood types, only a few are significant when it comes to transfusion safety. Cats have three: A, B, and AB. Careful blood typing and matching are essential to every transfusion we perform.

Today on World Blood Donor Day, we recognize Dr. Dusty, our dedicated veterinary team, and the incredible pets who make our blood bank possible—our Blood Bank Heroes. These in-house donors play a critical role in helping us provide life-saving care when it matters most.

🌞🐾Summertime Play, the LVCC Way!🐾🌞

At The Playground, we believe in playing with manners—and mindfulness! Your pets’ safety and well-being are always our top priorities, especially during Louisiana’s hot, humid summers.

That’s why we’ve created a space that adapts to all kinds of weather:
✔️ Covered outdoor areas for shaded play
💦 Water fun and hydration stations to keep cool
▶️ An indoor play zone for stormy days or intense heat

But the care doesn’t stop at our gates—here are some tips for keeping your pet safe during the summer heat:

🐶 Know your pet’s heat risk: Flat-faced breeds (like Bulldogs and Pugs), seniors, and overweight pets are more vulnerable to overheating.
🧊 Cool—not cold: Use cooling mats, frozen pet-safe treats, and shaded areas. Avoid dumping ice water on an overheated pet, as it can cause shock.
🌬 Fans aren’t quite enough: Dogs and cats don’t sweat like we do. Always provide shade, fresh water, and proper ventilation.
