We have had clients recently ask about home cooking for their pets and the nutritional benefits that come with it. We have researched this topic and compiled a list of pros and cons regarding home-cooked meals for your fur-baby:

Pros - The benefits of home-cooked meals include palatability, digestibility, and ingredient control (fresh, variety, & no preservatives). Cooking for your pet can also improve your emotional bond.

Cons - Creating a meal plan for your pet can be costly and timely. Researching prior to beginning this process is crucial as it is important to ensure your pet receives all of their essential nutrients. It can also create a higher risk of your pet contracting a foodborne illness if not properly stored/handled.

In conclusion, always consult with your veterinarian before making any major diet changes for your pet. It is important in building a balanced diet for your pet if you do choose to start home cooking. So, we recommend using the balance.it website. This website helps create free instant custom recipes that include all of their essential nutrients. This website is also board-certified veterinary nutritionist approved.

This is a team member shoutout post for our practice manager, Hale. Many of our clients would describe Hale as a very welcoming, positive, and caring person. Though we are biased, that is exactly what she is. Hale does so much for our hospital every day, from managing roles to helping treat our patients. This girl works hard and deserves to be celebrated every day. Thank you Hale for everything you do for South Baton Rouge Animal Hospital and our people! You are the best! 🩷

Did you know this?

🐾Cats are induced ovulators, which means that they will only release eggs after mating with a male. This creates a higher chance of pregnancy after conception compared to other species. It is important to keep your kitty inside and/or away from intact male cats if you do not want additional kittens. Ensuring that your cat is spayed will prevent unwanted pregnancies, reproductive diseases/infections, and even cancer. This procedure can result in a longer and healthier life for your cat.

Did you know this? Or could have probably guessed? 🦟

We all know that Louisiana is famous for mosquitos due to our humid climate and marsh land. With mosquitos come heartworm disease and one bite from one could affect your fur-baby. You can protect against the infection by keeping your pet up-to-date on their heartworm prevention. It is also important in testing for heartworm disease through a blood sample on an annual basis to ensure the prevention is working.

⭐If you have any questions regarding heartworm disease or prevention, please give us a call at (225) 367-1636.

South Baton Rouge Animal Hospital is dedicated to the community

South Baton Rouge Animal Hospital is a new full-service veterinary clinic serving pets and their families in Baton Rouge. But we are not new, only this location. Our experienced team has been in the area caring for animals for decades, and we are excited to bring this high level of care and service to South Baton Rouge. As family members, dogs and cats deserve the very best veterinary medicine has to offer.

With exceptional and compassionate care as our driving force, we utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools for rapid and accurate diagnoses. We go beyond the traditional primary care practice, however. Because of our relationship with Sherwood South Animal Hospital, an established primary care and 24/7 ER hospital, and Baton Rouge Veterinary Specialists, we can handle anything your pet requires. If needed, we can safely transport patients to Sherwood South for emergency and critical care and overnight hospitalization. Patients who need more advanced care can stay within our family through referral to Baton Rouge Veterinary Specialists.

We love our community and are grateful to be able to serve our neighbors. We can’t wait to meet you and your furry family members when we open in mid-September 2018.
