As temperatures rise, it’s important to be mindful of your cat’s safety. Here are some crucial points to keep your feline friends safe during the summer! ☀️

🌱 Safe Garden Practices: Use pet-safe pesticides and w**d killers to protect your cats from harmful chemicals. Avoid products containing permethrins, which are toxic to cats.

🐜 Pest Prevention: Summer is prime time for mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Ensure your cat is on a veterinarian-recommended heartworm and flea prevention regimen to protect them from pests and diseases!

🦊 Predator Awareness: Predators like foxes and coyotes are more active during dawn and dusk. Supervise your cat during these times or keep them indoors to ensure their safety.

Coming in hot with some knowledge! It's peak litter season and we get a lot of questions through email and DMs about what to do when you find litters of kittens, first thing is to consider the following before taking action:

Conditions: Are the kittens injured or sick? If the kittens are in good condition (seem healthy and fed), they are likely being cared for by their mother who is somewhere nearby.

Age: To the best of your ability, determine the age of the kittens, you can use our graphic as a reference.

Situation: Is the mother present or likely nearby? Every situation is different and it's up to you to use your best judgement in deciding if intervention is needed or how to intervene. If there is evidence their mom is caring for them, DO NOT kit-nap. It's best to leave them where they are, their best chance for survival is with their mother.

Ability: If Mom does not seem to be present and caring for them, your abilities and access to community resources will factor in how you respond. Give the kittens the most positive outcome possible, while working within your means and capacity. This often includes utilizing your social media and personal network to help find placement or utilizing your local shelter for care!

Senior cats may struggle with accessing their food, water, and litter boxes. To promote their comfort and independence, it's important to tailor their environment to meet their changing needs. 💙
Elevate their bowls, choose low-entry litter boxes, and place multiple boxes around your home for easy access. If you have a multi-story home, make sure you have a box on each floor!

🐱🚪 Did you know? Isaac Newton, the famous physicist, is credited with inventing the cat door in the early 18th century!

Legend has it that while studying at Cambridge University, Newton grew tired of his pet cats interrupting his experiments by pawing at the door (we all know how that goes!). So, he came up with a clever solution: he simply cut a large hole in his door for his cat. To keep the drafts out, he draped a cloth over the hole, creating the first-ever cat flap!

You might notice a belly flap swinging from side to side as your cat walks, but don't worry! It's not always because they are overweight.
Also called the primordial pouch, this flap is an extra layer of loose skin and fatty tissue that runs along the length of a cat's stomach but is more pronounced towards the rear. Its function is to help protect the cat's vital organs, allow for agile movement, and even help with storing food after eating.
The primordial pouch is more noticeable on some cats than others, which is completely normal. A good way to tell the difference between a primordial pouch and your cat being overweight is to check your cat's body condition or speak to your veterinary team!
