For many horse owners, September marks the start of clipping season as horses begin to grow their winter coats 🐴

Getting the timing and type of clip right for your horse's workload makes a real difference to their comfort and performance through the autumn and winter months. A horse that is working regularly and sweating heavily in a full winter coat can lose condition quickly and take much longer to dry off after exercise.

It's also worth bearing in mind that any horse with a coat that is slow to shed, excessively thick or unusually curly may be showing early signs of PPID (Cushing's disease). If you have any concerns about your horse's coat this autumn, it's worth having a conversation with your vet.

As the ground gets wetter and horses spend more time in muddy conditions, mud fever becomes one of the most common problems we see at this time of year 🐴

Mud fever is caused by a bacterial infection that takes hold when the skin on the lower legs is repeatedly wet and softened. Prevention is far easier than treatment, and a few simple management steps can make a real difference. Keeping legs as clean and dry as possible, avoiding over-washing which strips the skin's natural oils, and checking legs regularly for early signs of soreness or scabbing all help.

If you notice any heat, swelling, scabbing or hair loss on your horse's lower legs, it's worth acting quickly before the condition takes hold.

All horses undergo detailed pre-anaesthetic checks before going to theatre, and we use the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques throughout. Horses recovering from general anaesthesia use our purpose-built assisted recovery system in a padded anaesthesia room, giving them the safest and most comfortable recovery possible.

Caring for a foal in the first few months of life is one of the most rewarding but also one of the most demanding things a horse owner can take on 🐴

Foals develop quickly, and keeping a close eye on them during those early weeks gives you the best chance of spotting any problems before they become serious. Things that might seem minor in an adult horse can escalate quickly in a young foal, so if something doesn't seem right, it's always worth picking up the phone.

Our Zone Visits run throughout the week, covering a wide area across North Yorkshire and beyond 🐴

Here's how the schedule works:

Zone A: every Monday
Zone B: every Tuesday
Zone C: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month
Zone D: 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month
Zone E: 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month
Zone F: 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month
Zone G: 2nd and 3rd Friday of the month

The call-out fee is just £12 per horse, and bookings must be made online before midday on the working day before your zone day. Check the zone map on our website to see which zone applies to your location.

Did you know you can have one of our vets visit your yard for a call-out fee of just £12? 🐴

Our Reduced Fee Zone Visit scheme has been running since November 2021 and is designed to make routine preventative healthcare more accessible for horse owners across North Yorkshire and the wider region.

The scheme works by concentrating our ambulatory visits into specific areas on set days each week, keeping costs low for clients in those zones. Services available on zone visits include vaccinations, initial examinations, microchipping, blood sampling, prescription checks and general health checks.

August is the time many competition horses begin their push towards the final events of the season and their owners start planning for autumn 🐴

A busy summer of competing takes its toll, and it's worth taking an honest look at how your horse is feeling before committing to an autumn programme. Changes in way of going, slower recovery after events, early joint stiffness or unexplained changes in behaviour can all be signs that something needs attention before the workload increases again.

Getting on top of any niggles now is far better than heading into autumn with an unresolved problem. Our team is here to help with health checks, lameness assessment and joint management.

After months of rich summer grazing, it's worth taking a close look at your horse's body condition before autumn arrives 🌿🐴

Many horses and ponies arrive at August carrying more weight than is ideal, and excess condition puts real strain on joints and feet. It also significantly increases the risk of laminitis, particularly while grass sugar levels remain high through late summer.

Body condition scoring is a simple hands-on assessment of fat cover over the neck, shoulders, ribs, back and hindquarters. A score of around three out of five is ideal for most horses. If your horse is scoring above that, now is the time to start managing it, before the colder months make weight loss harder.
