Please think before walking your dog in this heat.

I genuinely can’t understand why some people are still taking their dogs out for walks on scorching pavement in this weather. Having lost a beloved family dog to heatstroke when I was younger, I can tell you, it’s absolutely devastating. It’s not just uncomfortable for them; it can be fatal, and it happens much faster than many people realize.

Dogs don’t sweat like we do. They rely on panting to cool down, and when the temperature rises too high, their bodies can quickly overheat. Even short walks on hot days can lead to heatstroke, especially for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs, older dogs, or those with thick coats.

If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. And if you’re feeling hot, your dog is likely feeling worse.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Lethargy or confusion
• Bright red or pale gums
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Collapse or seizures

If you suspect heatstroke, it’s an emergency. Move your dog to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and contact a vet immediately.

Please, walk your dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler—or skip the walk altogether and find safer ways to keep them stimulated indoors. Their safety must come first.
