Jacob has been kept busy today disbudding a group of calves on one of our dairy farms šŸ®

Disbudding is a routine procedure carried out when calves are young to prevent horns from developing later in life. Before the procedure, each calf receives pain relief and a local anaesthetic.

Preventing horn growth helps reduce the risk of injury to other cattle and the people handling them.

Emily was out this afternoon to examine a sick cow. As part of her treatment plan, she passed a stomach tube to administer fluids and electrolytes to help correct dehydration. This is a much faster and more practical way of rehydrating a sick cow than trying to get her to drink on her own, especially when sheā€™s off her feed and water. Rehydrating the rumen helps restore its normal function, supports digestion and gives the cow the best possible chance of recovering.
