Fly numbers are on the rise! 🪰

We have noticed a significant increase in fly populations over the past week, making now the perfect time to ensure your Bestico Fly Bucket Traps are refilled and positioned strategically around the farm.

Fly traps help draw flies away from cattle and out of buildings, reducing nuisance flies and improving comfort for both livestock and staff.

Refreshed bovine TB strategy 🐄

The APHA has published a refreshed bovine TB strategy, outlining how England aims to achieve Officially Bovine TB-Free status by 2038.

Key priorities outlined include:
- Earlier detection of infection through more targeted testing to reduce cattle-to-cattle spread
- Introduction of cattle vaccination alongside a new DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) test by 2030
- Stronger focus on herd-level risk management and biosecurity, particularly around cattle movements and purchasing decisions.
- Continued development of enhanced testing and surveillance tools
- Expansion of badger vaccination programmes and implementation of a deer surveillance strategy
- Improved access to TB data and support for farmers and vets

Last week, we were delighted to host the final session of the XLVets Farm Southwest Youngstock Project, a series of 4 training and development days for independent vet practices focusing on all things calf health.

This session welcomed Paul Bartholomew from Bart Agri and Jennifer Lock from Boehringer Ingelheim to share their knowledge of calf housing design and disinfection protocols, followed by a farm walk to practice highlighting useful and effective adjustments to existing sheds and management processes that can be applied to calving systems.

This week we have celebrated National Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) Week!

At Wyvern, we are proud to have Harriet as a qualified SQP. We are also happy to announce that Georgina and Jacob are currently working towards their SQP qualification, strengthening the support and advice we can offer.

An SQP is an animal medicines advisor who is qualified to supply and provide advice on certain categories of veterinary medicines alongside vets. They play a vital role in supporting animal health and welfare by providing advice on parasite control, preventative healthcare, medicine dosages and the safe and responsible use of veterinary medicines.

Bluetongue Update 🦟

APHA has confirmed that the midges responsible for spreading Bluetongue are now active and the recent warm weather has enabled the virus to replicate and spread.

⚠️ The current risk level for Bluetongue remains MEDIUM.

Now is a good time to:
✅ Review your farm’s biosecurity measures
✅ Check the latest movement requirements before moving livestock
✅ Speak us about whether vaccination is appropriate for your herd or flock
✅ Stay vigilant for signs of disease and report any suspicions immediately

Making life easier on farm 🐄

Mr Sargent has recently taken delivery of his Urban Milk Trolley – a welcome upgrade after years of carrying buckets of milk to his calves.

Now, with a safer, more efficient way to feed, he’s saving time and reducing the physical strain of daily tasks.

Great to hear he’s very pleased with the difference it’s already making!
