An evening caesarean for on-call vet Katie, with final-year University of Surrey student Charnia kindly joining.

After numerous unsuccessful attempts of delivering their first red-heifer calf, this little girl arrived safe and sound- alive, kicking and affectionately named "Katie". Welcome to the future herd, little Katie!

Thankfully, Luton the farm terrier was on hand to clean the calf whilst mum was being stitched up by Charnia.

Lung Scanning ๐Ÿ”Ž

Pneumonia in young calves can cause permanent lung damage โ€“ reducing growth rates and lifetime productivity, but not every calf shows obvious signs on the outside.

How can lung scanning help?
โ€ข Spot hidden pneumonia early
โ€ข Allow prompt treatment to minimise impact of pneumonia and reduce antibiotic use
โ€ข Aid decision making of which heifers are the best to keep as replacements

Healthy lungs mean healthier, faster-growing calves โ€“ and improved productivity. Please give us a call if you are interested or would like to know more - 01373 451115.

Concerned about calf losses on your farm?

We offer an on-farm Post-Mortem service to help investigate the reasons behind calf deaths, with a particular focus on Perinatal Mortality (PNM).

๐Ÿ”What is PNM?
Any calf that is born dead (stillborn) or dies within the first 48 hours of life.

๐ŸŽฏTarget incidence:
Less than 2% per year โ€“ thatโ€™s no more than 1 loss in every 50 calvings.

Many cases are not as straightforward as they seem. Often, other modifiable factors set off a chain of events that eventually leads to a loss. Our aim is not only to identify the cause of death but also to highlight those modifiable factors and work with you on strategies to improve outcomes.

Alongside perinatal cases, we also provide a Post-Mortem service for calves of all ages to support investigations and reduce future losses. If youโ€™re concerned about calf losses in your herd, give us a call on 01373 451115.
