EVER HEARD OF BURPING A BUDGIE CHICK? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Most people haven't.

This chick's crop wasn't full of food. It was full of air.
In this reel, I show what happened, why it can occur, and how I carefully removed the trapped air from the crop.

Definitely not something you see every day!

Have you ever seen a chick with a crop full of air before? ๐Ÿ‘‡

I saw a lot of England football shirts being advertised and it got me thinking...

What if there was one for budgie lovers? ๐Ÿ‘€

So, what do you think?

Would you wear this?

๐Ÿ‘ Yes

โค๏ธ I'd buy one

๐Ÿ˜‚ Not a chance

I'm genuinely curious how many people would actually wear a budgie-themed England shirt.

Let me know below!

Double Success on the Show Bench!

A really pleasing day on the show bench today.

My Grey Blackface Blackwing SF Anthracite was awarded Best of Colour in its class, competing against a total of 8 birds. It's fantastic to see the Blackface Blackwing variety getting the recognition it deserves.

There still aren't many Blackface Blackwings around that are true colour budgerigar size. Many tend to be bred towards pet-type size, which unfortunately makes them too large for the colour budgerigar classes. Breeding them to the correct size while maintaining the variety isn't always easy, so results like this are especially rewarding.

To top it off, my Sky Blue Opaline Hen also won Best of Colour in the Young Bird Class, making it a very successful day on the show bench.

Days like this make all the hard work worthwhile and show that colour budgerigars can still be competitive while remaining true to the standard.

Congratulations to all the other winners at the Cornwall rares show today.

A very late post from us tonight!

We're currently at the Travelodge in Cornwall ready for another bird show in the morning. It's been a long day travelling, settling in, and making sure everything is ready, but we're looking forward to it.

One of the best parts of these shows is catching up with friends and fellow bird keepers that we don't get to see very often. It's always great to have a chat, see some fantastic birds, and meet new faces along the way.

We're very excited to see everyone again tomorrow and see what the day brings.

If you're attending, come and say hello! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Who else enjoys bird shows as much as we do? ๐Ÿฆ

I came across this video and thought it was absolutely adorable!

My heart was set on a conure before we bought the pionus.
These are beautiful birds.

๐Ÿšจ A Pink Cere Does NOT Mean Female! ๐Ÿšจ

I keep seeing people confidently misgendering recessive pied budgies because they have a pink cere.

The recessive pied gene affects the cere colour. Unlike normal males that develop a blue cere, recessive pied males keep a pink or purplish-pink cere for life.

Females never have a pink cere. They develop the usual female cere colours, ranging from whitish-blue to brown depending on condition.
So if you see a recessive pied with a pink cere, don't automatically assume it's female. In fact, it's usually one of the easiest ways to identify a male!

How many recessive pied males have you seen incorrectly labelled as females?

She came for 1 budgie... but left with 2!

Today a customer visited Somerset Aviaries to collect her very first budgie.

Well... that was the plan anyway!

After spending time with the birds, she ended up leaving with 2 young violet sky blue males, a cage, a bag of seed, and some millet sprays to help them settle into their new home.

She was given plenty of help and advice to get started and even had the chance to hold some of the baby budgies still in the nest boxes, which she absolutely loved.

One of the youngsters may have French moult, so he was offered free of charge. The cage was also set up to make life easier for him should his disability become permanent. Every bird deserves a chance, and she was more than happy to give him that opportunity.

By the time she left, she was completely over the moon with her new additions.

Who else went to get one bird and somehow came home with more than planned? ๐Ÿ‘€

You all know I'm usually posting budgie eggs...

So this is a bit different! ๐Ÿ˜†

I spotted these while out and about and thought it would make a fun challenge.

They definitely aren't budgie eggs, but can you tell me what they are before watching the reel?

Bonus points if you know what's growing inside them too!

Drop your guesses below before you watch ๐Ÿ‘‡

If I could only keep 5 bird products in my bird room... these would probably be them. ๐Ÿ‘€

Over the years I've tried plenty of different supplements, treatments and tonics, but I always find myself reaching for the same products time and time again.

โœ” Avigold Advance
โœ” Fetura-12
โœ” Calciform HiD3
โœ” Exzolt
โœ” Ivermectin

Each one serves a different purpose. From supporting general health and breeding condition, to maintaining calcium levels and helping tackle external parasites when needed.
Are they the only products available? Of course not.

But if you walked into my bird room today, there's a very good chance you'd find all 5 of these sitting on the shelf ready to use.

Everyone has their own favourites, but these are the products I trust and keep coming back to year after year.

What's the one bird product you wouldn't want to be without? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“ข Important Golden Wings Aviaries Update ๐Ÿ“ข

Please give this post a share so it reaches as many bird owners and breeders as possible. ๐Ÿฆโค๏ธ

Many of you know that parasite prevention is something I take extremely seriously here at Golden Wings Aviaries. Every bird that leaves me has been treated as part of my routine health programme, giving new owners peace of mind that their babies have been protected against common parasites before heading to their new homes.

Firstly, I'd like to say a huge thank you to one of my customers, who kindly brought this to my attention after contacting Hyperdrug directly. Without her reaching out, I may not have discovered the issue until much later, so I am incredibly grateful for the heads up. โค๏ธ

Unfortunately, I've recently been informed that the Moxidectin product I use has been discontinued. Customers who have contacted Hyperdrug directly have been advised that the product was manufactured in house and will no longer be produced following changes within the company.

This has created a significant problem, not just for myself, but potentially for many bird keepers and breeders across the UK who rely on it as part of their preventative healthcare routine.

To put it into perspective, I typically go through around three bottles every month. It has been a key part of my flock management for years and allows me to confidently send birds to their new homes knowing they have received preventative parasite treatment before leaving.

I also recommend Moxidectin to many of my customers and it has become an incredibly popular product amongst budgie keepers and breeders. It is regularly recommended throughout budgie groups and communities, so I know I won't be the only person feeling the effects of this news.

I won't lie, this has caused me a bit of a headache. When you manage a large breeding programme, suddenly losing access to something you've relied on for years is never ideal. I suspect a lot of breeders are currently having exactly the same panic as I am right now while they search for alternatives! ๐Ÿ˜…

The welfare of my birds will always come first, so please rest assured that I am already looking at every possible option. I have checked multiple suppliers and stockists, but many alternatives are either unavailable or already sold out due to the sudden demand.

For those wondering about my own birds, they were last treated between the 25th and 27th of May, so there is no immediate concern.

As a reminder, my birds are treated monthly as part of my preventative healthcare programme.

๐Ÿ  Indoor birds are generally covered for around 3 months following treatment.

๐ŸŒณ Outdoor and aviary birds are generally covered for around 1 month due to their increased exposure to environmental risks.

This means I still have some time to source a suitable replacement, but I wanted to make everyone aware of the situation now, particularly those who also use Moxidectin as part of their own preventative care routine.

I will update everyone as soon as I find a suitable replacement or receive further information.

If anyone has managed to source a reputable alternative, or has information from suppliers that may help, please feel free to get in touch.

Most importantly, please give this post a share. The more people who see it, the better the chance of locating stock, finding alternatives and helping fellow bird keepers who may not yet be aware of the situation.

Thank you all for your continued support. โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆ
