Myth Busting Time!
Myth: All calves with loose manure need antibiotics
Sounds reasonable, right? We are very quick to reach for all the tools in the toolbox to help out these struggling animals but is the kitchen sink really necessary for every loose stool, or does it have the potential to cause harm? An abstract submitted from the University of Guelph suggests that treating every calf with loose manure actually may result in worse outcomes compared to saving antibiotics for calves with more than one sign of illness. This may seem strange, but the suspicion is that antibiotics can harm the normal gut microbiome and weaken its defensive strength. This finding helps us re-evaluate where to start when we see a case of diarrhea!

We recommend discussing these findings with your herd health veterinarian to find out how you can fine tune your approach to calf diarrhea!

Meet Kendra! Kendra is our VERY FIRST OVC externship student- previously this 8 week extenship had to be a mix of small and large animal medicine, but recent changes in OVC curriculum requirements allow us to take 4th year students on in this capacity!

Kendra is from Stratford ON and fell in love with cattle and production medicine while completing a research project at the UofG. She then completed her masters degree focusing on transmission of bovine leukosis virus in dairy calves. This research has been influential already on vets and producers in Ontario.

Along with pregnancy diagnosis and sick cow work, Kendra has a keen interest in learning about milk quality and wants to help dairy clients better understand how teat end health impacts risk for mastitis. She's so excited, she will come out to your herd, free of charge and teat score your cows, along with other animal based measures to help you improve milk quality in your herd. Comment below or reach out to us to let us know you are interested!

Check out this picture of Kendra delivering a calf on the first week of her rotation! Under the supervision of Dr. Mike, the calf was delivered and mom was up in no time flat. Way to go Kendra!

There's a preventative product that isn't available at a vet clinic that you need to know about. Beddingcycline is a wonder drug that helps prevent everything from calfhood disease to mastitis, lameness and it can even improve your production.😂 Have you heard of this preventative yet?

Let's be serious for a second- the herds we see invest in making sure there is ample clean dry bedding for all their animals are reducing their treatment rates and spending less money on treating cases of disease.

Lets see some pictures of you using Beddingcycline to its fullest potential!
