As many of you will be aware, H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a number of wild birds in WA, SA and NSW in the last few weeks. While Queensland currently remains free of the disease it is important that we be aware of the possibility of an outbreak so that our wildlife, livestock, pet birds and community stay safe.
What is H5N1 bird flu?
A highly contagious viral disease primarily affecting wild birds and poultry which can spread rapidly.
What are the signs?
Birds may show respiratory signs such as difficulty breathing or gasping; lethargy; neurological signs including twisted neck, tremors, inability to stand or fly.
What should you do if you see an unwell bird?
AVOID - do not touch or approach sick or dead wild birds
- keep pets and children well away from sick birds
RECORD - take a photo or short video if possible
- note exact location
REPORT - immediately report unusual illness or multiple deaths to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
