Things Your Pet Really Wishes You Knew…

“If I’m scratching all the time… it’s not a personality trait.” 😒
“If my breath smells foul… please don’t ignore it.”
“If I stop eating, something’s wrong — I’m not on a diet.”
“If I’m suddenly drinking ALL the water… that’s not normal.”
“If I slow down… don’t just call me ‘old’.”

We might not speak your language — but we’re always telling you something.

💜 Listen a little closer — your pet’s trying to help you help them.

Noticing unexpected accidents? Learn what could be behind them — and how we can help.

If your dog has started leaking urine, having accidents overnight, or leaving small wet spots where they rest — it may not be behavioural.

Incontinence is more common than many owners realise, especially in older dogs and certain breeds. It’s often linked to underlying medical causes — and in many cases, it’s very manageable.

The key is recognising that it’s not something your dog can control.

Dr Ingrid explains the causes, diagnosis and treatment options in her latest blog➡️ https://www.cottagevet.co.za/incontinence/

For some cats, urinary blockages aren’t a once-off problem — they recur, becoming painful, stressful, and potentially life-threatening.

When medical management is no longer enough, a urethrostomy can offer a life-changing solution. By creating a new urinary opening, this procedure helps reduce the risk of repeated blockages and can significantly improve a cat’s quality of life.

If you and your pet are facing ongoing urinary issues, it may be time to consider when advanced care becomes the right step. While it may sound complex, for the right patient, it can be a turning point.

Dr Ingrid explains when this surgery is recommended, what it involves, and what recovery looks like in her latest blog: https://www.cottagevet.co.za/urethrostomy/

Cats are masters at hiding illness — and kidney disease is one of the most common conditions we see, especially as they get older.

Subtle changes like drinking more water, weight loss, or a drop in appetite are often easy to miss… until the disease has progressed.

The earlier it’s detected, the more we can do to slow it down and support quality of life.

Ask yourself, “would I notice these changes in my cat?” - learn what they could mean.

Dr Ingrid unpacks the early signs, diagnosis and long-term management in her latest blog ➡️ https://www.cottagevet.co.za/kidney-disease-in-cats/

It’s frustrating — but it’s rarely “bad behaviour.”

When cats urinate outside the litter box, it’s often their way of telling you something’s wrong. It could be stress, a medical issue, or even something as simple as litter preferences.

The key? Don’t ignore it — and don’t punish it.

Understanding the why is the first step to fixing it ➡️ recognition:👉 “My cat does this… I need to understand why.”

👉 Tired of the guesswork? Learn what your cat is trying to tell you.

In her latest blog, Dr Ingrid breaks down the most common causes — and what you can do about it: https://www.cottagevet.co.za/urinate-outside-litter-box/

Frequent trips outside. Straining. Accidents in the house.

When it comes to bladder health, small changes can signal a bigger problem.

Bladder stones and urinary infections are more common than many pet owners realise — and they can quickly become painful if left untreated.

Catching the signs early makes all the difference, often leading to simpler treatment and a faster recovery. Notice something off?

Dr Ingrid explains what to look out for, what causes these conditions, and how we treat them in her latest blog: https://www.cottagevet.co.za/bladder-stones-infection/
