Veterinarians and their healthcare team are working well together and must have appropriate protection such as exam gloves when handling pets and their bodily fluids.

This World Veterinary Day, to every vet, tech, nurse, and member of the veterinary team—please make sure to protect yourselves.

You dedicate your lives to protecting and saving animals.
You work through long hours, difficult cases, and emotional stress—often while being exposed to bites, scratches, infectious diseases, and potentially contaminated blood, urine, and other body fluids.

In this case, a veterinary team member initially developed body aches, fever, nausea, and sweating.

Two days later, they briefly lost consciousness and were treated for vasovagal syncope before being discharged.

Over the next few days, the illness worsened—progressing to calf pain, shortness of breath, cough, headache, conjunctival redness, edema, lightheadedness, and ā€œbrain fog.ā€

The only identified risk factor was occupational exposure to dogs and canine body fluids.

By day 6, the patient was hospitalized again with pleural effusion, hypoxemia, and acute kidney injury.

Despite informing multiple healthcare providers about occupational exposure and nearby canine leptospirosis cases, testing was delayed until day 8, when leptospirosis was confirmed.

Treatment with doxycycline began on day 11, and the patient improved and was discharged the following day.

Please protect yourselves.
Use your PPE.
Listen to your body.
Seek medical attention when something feels wrong.

You spend every day caring for others—please don’t forget to care for yourselves, too.šŸ’™

We at North College Road Animal Hospital have been serving the New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick County Southeastern North Carolina for three and half decades. Caring for generations of family pet owners. One furry friend at a time. Always giving back to our community. Not many private practices anymore but we know that we will continue to serve our family pet community for years to come. We love what we do and will be guided by the veterinarian oath. It’s all about communication and dedication to our community and not Big Pharma. If you love what you do every day then you do not work a day in your life. Passion over profits!!

🩺 A Message from Your Copley Fairlawn Veterinary Family 🐾

You may have seen the news — the biggest online pet retailer just acquired 29 veterinary clinics across the country.

We get it. Sometimes, convenience wins out in a pinch. But it’s important to understand what’s really happening behind the headlines. These acquisitions aren’t about pets, people, or passion — they’re about profits. The article announcing this move was filled with words like revenue, EBITDA, return on investment, run rate, and shareholder value.

Not one word about veterinary medicine.
Not one word about the patients.
Not one word about the teams who pour their hearts into this work every single day.

And that tells you everything you need to know about who’s sitting at the table making these decisions.

At Copley Fairlawn Veterinary Clinic, we live and breathe for the pets and the people who love them. We’re not backed by billionaires — we’re a family-owned, family-run clinic that stays late, skips meals, and sacrifices our own time so your pets can have the best care possible.
We may not dominate the market, but we know your pet’s name, their quirks, and their story — and that’s what matters.

So when you choose local, you’re not just supporting a business. You’re supporting the people who are right there beside you in your pet’s happiest — and hardest — moments.

From our family to yours, thank you for letting us do what we love. šŸ¾šŸ«¶šŸ¼
It will always be about the pets first. Always.

Case Study: Achille, a European Shorthair Cat with Chronic Gingivostomatitis.

Achille, a 10-year-old neutered European Shorthair, presented with chronic recurrent gingivostomatitis unresponsive to prior antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid). Clinical signs included oral pain during prehension, halitosis, hypersalivation, weight loss, and decreased coat quality, with behavioral changes consistent with chronic discomfort.
Therapeutic protocol:
MLSĀ® Laser Therapy was administered using the ā€œGingivitis-Stomatitisā€ protocol in Point-to-Point mode (0.8 cm lens), applied to the gingival and maxillomandibular regions. Treatment frequency consisted of three sessions per week for two weeks, followed by two sessions per week for an additional two weeks. Maintenance therapy was recommended.
Outcome:
A marked reduction in pain was observed following the initial session, with clinically significant improvement in gingival inflammation documented after six treatments.
This case demonstrates the clinical utility of MLSĀ® Laser Therapy as an adjunctive modality in the management of refractory feline gingivostomatitis.
