https://petportal.vet/sandy-paws-animal-hospital Here at Sandy Paws we are taking on the corporate animal hospitals and taking back our community. Your pet is not a dollar sign. Your pet is definitely not an uptick on a stock price. Your pet is FAMILY. We’re here, we see you and we definitely hear you. The cost of medical care for your pet has become OUTRAGEOUS. Not because of inflation, not becau

se of the economy, but because of corporate greed. Full stop, that’s not how we do business here. We are here to serve Wilmington with three main objectives:

–To take immaculate care of your pets, obviously!

–To uplift our community with fun events, educational opportunities and outreach intervention for those who are in need.

–To ensure a livable wage for our office staff (the lifeblood of any animal hospital) and to continue to raise awareness for the initiative. You will see us around at local community events. We’ll be there to support your kid’s fundraising efforts. We will be your first line of support when your fur baby needs it the most. Join us on this journey in bringing Mom & Pop Shops back to Wilmington. We can’t wait to welcome you to our paw-some family.

🐾✨Staff Spotlight: Dr. Finkle (Veterinarian)✨🐾

Dr. Finkle has been practicing veterinary medicine for 11 years and has worked in the veterinary field for nearly 20. She attended the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was classmates with Dr. Cassie. Her experience includes urgent care, relief, and shelter medicine, with special interests in feline medicine and soft tissue surgery.

She shares her home with one dog, Bernadette, and four cats: Sullivan, Fat Lou, Cable, and Nimbus.

Originally from the Appalachian Mountains, Dr. Finkle loves outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, and skiing. Since relocating to Wilmington, she has continued kayaking, taken up biking, and enjoys spending time at the beach. She also loves traveling, live music, and trying new restaurants wherever she goes. Her favorite place to be is with her husband, Travis, and their two-year-old son, Alastor.

After moving to Wilmington, Dr. Finkle reconnected with Dr. Cassie and has now been part of the Sandy Paws team for a year.

Dr. Finkle is excited to be part of the Sandy Paws team and grateful to have found a home away from home doing what she loves.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As we wrap up the month, we are reminded that behind every visit is a veterinary team that cares deeply for every animal they come across. Not One More Vet works to support veterinary professionals by raising awareness, reducing stigma, and expanding access to mental-health resources so we can keep providing the best care for your pets.

If you notice your vet or clinic team looking overwhelmed, please offer patience, a kind word, or a quick thank-you — those small gestures matter. If you’re able, share this post to help spread awareness and support our incredible team who love and care for every patient, big or small 🐾🐶🐱

Veterinary medicine is built on care, but that care has to extend to the people providing it, too.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that supporting veterinary teams goes beyond recognition. It’s about creating environments where people can take breaks, ask for help, set boundaries, and feel supported by those around them.

If you’re in practice, consider one small change this week that supports your team’s wellbeing. It matters more than you think.

🐾✨Staff Spotlight: Linda (Administrative Assistant)✨🐾

Linda is our Administrative Assistant; although she's only been with Sandy Paws since September, she has worked in veterinary medicine for almost 20 years and has worn many hats! (and has somehow managed to remain somewhat sane)

When not at work you will find her cycling around Wilmington, enjoying our local breweries (usually with her bearded dragon (Delores) and/or dog (Tovy) in tow!), and being scolded for trying to pet every animal she sees, regardless of its teeth or fangs. Linda firmly believes that all alligators really want their chins scratched, and all snakies just want a boop on their snoot! No animal is off limits for Linda - she wants to pet them all.

05/18/2026

We will be closed Monday 5/25/26 in observance of Memorial Day, and will reopen with normal business hours on Tuesday 5/26/26.

If your pet is in need of urgent medical care, please contact Truss Urgent Care at (910) 900-3763 and located at 1303 Independence Blvd # A, Wilmington, NC 28403

For emergencies, please contact Animal Emergency Trauma Hospital at (910) 790-1070 and located at 50 Greenville Ave, Wilmington, NC 28403

🐾✨Staff Spotlight: Cat (Reception)✨🐾

Cat was born in the good ol’ days, as referenced by the Christmas picture where she received the best gift ever, her cowgirl outfit. She wishes, to this day, that they made this outfit in an adult size. You can see her younger sister, who had to copy everything she did, but we all know who the real cowgirl is. Cat’s nurturing side is also on full display, cradling a baby doll that was added to her baby doll collection. They weren’t creepy at all in the ‘70s.

The cat (one of twelve- yes, you read that right) is Little Chicky, the worst cat to ever live and the absolute favorite. He is a pro at chewing cords, harassing the other cats, chewing on toothbrushes, and generally destroying anything in his path. He is a goofy little guy, and very loved despite his destructive tendencies.

Cat’s favorite candy is Reese cups, and given the opportunity, she will eat two four packs, make herself sick, swear to never do it again, then eat them again the very next day. It’s a vicious cycle. Second only to the Reese cups is key lime pie, and she believes the only way to eat it is to treat it like a bowl of ice cream and eat the filling from the middle. Don’t judge her.

Cat loves her mom, and her Sandy Paws family. If you run into her in the wild, you may catch her sporting her Sandy Paws hat!

If you ever visit her home, just know that the cats rule the roost. You must love cats and be prepared to be covered in a bit of cat hair. Fair warning!

Introducingggg Meet the Staff Friday's! We will be posting about our amazing staff so you can get to know us a little better!

First up!

🐾✨Staff Spotlight: Ashlie (Reception/Veterinary Assistant)✨🐾

Ashlie has been apart of the Sandy Paws team since its inception in February 2024. When not at work - she loves to travel, read, have beach & pool days, adventure with her dogs, and train dogs. You may recognize her 2 sidekicks - Leo (husky) & Bay (golden retriever) - who sometimes show up for their shift at the front desk! She loves working in veterinary medicine - especially being able to educate clients about routine wellness services, prevention, and vaccines. She is an integral part of the Sandy Paws and we are so lucky to have her!
