VICTORY! Mexico bans dolphins and sea mammals in captivity! 🐬 🎉🩵

With full support from both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Mexico has passed legislation that prohibits the use of dolphins in shows, therapy, entertainment, research, and any other activity not related to conservation. The law also bans the breeding of dolphins in captivity.

“In March, Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) suspended shows at the Barceló Maya after the emergence earlier this year of a 2020 video of a leaping Mincho landing hard on concrete, and amid reports of the deaths of two other dolphins, Alex and Plata, last year.

Environment officials affirmed enforcement commitments during a June 18 meeting with Empty the Tanks activists, pledging permit reviews across all captive wildlife facilities.

Mexico houses approximately 350 captive dolphins,
ranking among the world’s top 10 dolphinarium operators.” Mexico News Daily

May every nation ban captivity! Thank you Mexico! 🇲🇽

Jurisdictions that have full or partial bans on keeping dolphins in captivity: Bolivia, China, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, India, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the American states California, New York, and South Carolina.

Happy 🐢 Day!

We honor our buddies, the turtle and tortoise, on May 23rd every year. The purpose of World Turtle Day 🌎🐢 is to ensure that we can safeguard these amazing creatures and their diverse ecosystems, in addition to expressing our love and admiration for them.

Understanding the distinctions between tortoises and turtles is crucial. Despite being members of the same family, tortoises are largely land animals, whereas turtles spend most of their time in or close to the water. 🌊

In their own environments, turtles and tortoises are both extraordinary animals. There are more than enough reasons to make sure they are protected! 💚

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

A new study published in the Cadillac of all journals, Nature, analyzed 32 dry & canned pet food products from the United States, (93 in total worldwide) and revealed a widespread presence of toxic metals, including chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), & arsenic (As), across various brands. Notably, lead (Pb) levels were the highest overall, with some samples exceeding established regulatory safety limits.

Exposure to lead in dogs can have negative effects on the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and blood. Cadmium is known for its cumulative toxicity and can induce cancer in animals through various mechanisms, and exposure to it can cause nephrotoxicity and damage to the small intestine. These heavy metals found in pet food place added stress on key organs, especially the kidneys, which are responsible for filtering toxins from the body. Over time, that toxic burden can contribute to kidney dysfunction and disease. 😿

So what can you do?

One simple way to support detox is chlorella🦠— a green algae known for its ability to bind heavy metals in the gut and support gentle detoxification. It’s not a cure-all, but it can be a helpful part of your toolkit. (Be sure to use a clean, third-party tested brand.)

The chemicals used in standard flea treatments are polluting waterways and having a drastic effect on wildlife like killing songbird chicks🪺.

"Research at the University of Sussex has found that pesticides used in regular flea treatments are in 98% of English rivers, often at levels far higher than those deemed safe.

Some of this is from treated dogs swimming, but much goes down the drain from households, (eg from shampooing dogs, washing bedding, stroking and washing hands) and then enters rivers, according to Dave Goulson, professor of biology at Sussex, who co-authored the study and supervised the research.

Recent research also found that 100% of blue tit🐦 and great tit nests🪹 are contaminated with pesticides💦 from pet flea treatment, as the birds collect fur from dogs and cats to insulate their nests. The study, funded by the charity Songbird Survival, found that nestling mortality is associated with higher levels of the pesticides.

[...] If spot-on products are considered the only appropriate form of treatment, you should brush your pet indoors or in a sheltered area where you can gather the hair afterwards and dispose of it in a sealed bag.

'What we don’t want is the hair blowing away and birds collecting it up as nesting material. I think a lot of us have probably thought that was kind of quite a nice thing for birds to do but clearly it really isn’t if the hair is contaminated with chemicals,' said Millineaux.

It is also important to take care of packaging material, particularly from spot-on products. 'I’ve heard horror stories of people washing out the little containers, which obviously do contaminate water,' added Millineaux.

'What we want to be doing is not washing them out but disposing them of them in something like a seal bag and following any manufacturers guidelines.'

Washing is discouraged for several days after treatments, owing to the risk of product getting into waterways. " - Guardian
