If you suspect your horse may have a metabolic disorder, it's important to take immediate action to ensure their health and well-being. Follow these management practices:
🟢Metabolic horses should be pulled off pasture and fed low starch and sugar diets
🟢If pasture-raised, use a well fitting grazing muzzle to reduce grass intake and consider using a dry lot
🟢If on feed, be sure it is low starch/sugar and fed as directed (ration balancers for easy keepers, or high fat, low starch and sugar feeds for harder keepers)
🟢Closely monitor body condition; weight control can help alleviate symptoms
🟢Exercise is key; keep your horse moving
Early prevention and careful management practices are key to helping your equine thrive.

Could your horse be metabolic?
Possible Insulin Dysregulation Symptoms:
🟢Cresty neck- a layer of excess fat found along the top of the neck
🟢Fatty deposits- abnormal pockets of fat that can hide muscle loss
🟢Obesity or potbelly- horses with a body condition score of 7 or higher or pendulous midsection with limited muscling or fat on the rest of the frame
🟢Laminitis- Abnormal shifting of weight, laying down frequently, lameness, visible changes to rings on the hoof, warmth, and pulse felt in hoof, reluctance to pick up or bend le
If you believe they have an issue, contact your vet for testing and recommended health and management best practices. Early diagnosis is key to helping your equine thrive.

“Here are Pumpkin’s hind feet 7 weeks apart. This was 2 trims from the farrier at 6 weeks apart. First photos are one week pre-trim, 2nd photos are one day post-trim. I used one full bag of HOOF treats to get these results. She is such a big mover, and she chips up her hind feet when I ride. Her sole looks fantastic, just a big moving 17.1 hand 5-year-old warmblood learning where her feet go. She was able to grow out enough hoof between the farrier coming that it all cleaned up nicely this time! I love that she’s using herself so well from the hind leg push, but I hate her feet all chipped up. Love that we could grow out enough hoof that we didn’t have to put shoes on.

Recognize pasture and grazing risks for your metabolic horses! Spring pastures bring an increase in starch and sugar levels, plus grasses tend to have more sugar in the morning/daytime vs night. Access to these areas should be stopped or limited- by restricting time or using a grazing muzzle. The best place for these horses would be a dry lot with low NSC hay.
