Happy National Veterinary Technician week! Every year, we get the opportunity to celebrate and thank our amazing staff. Being a Veterinary Technician is not an easy job and those that do it consider it a calling. Unless you have had the opportunity to work in a veterinary hospital, it's hard to even comprehend how amazing Veterinary Technicians truly are.

Here's a few things our Veterinary Technicians have done just this week: assisted a family with making the decision to say goodbye to their pet, drew a blood sample on a cat that wanted to bite them, triaged a sick patient that needed to come in right away, placed an IV catheter, discussed potty training with a new puppy owner, administered vaccines, performed ophthalmic diagnostics, made clay paw prints of a beloved patient that passed away, took dental radiographs, performed emergency life-saving measures on a trauma patient, discussed behavior issues and separation anxiety with a pet owner, administered and monitored anesthesia on surgery patients, read microscopic cytology, placed a urinary catheter, discussed fearful behavior in a dog and recommended medication to make the visit less stressful, the list could go on and on. The amazing thing is that they do all of these things every day and often simultaneously.

Veterinary Technicians are some of the most skilled and compassionate people I know. They are the true heart and soul of every veterinary hospital. I would trust each these ladies with my furry family and I cannot thank them enough.

Please give Molly, Willow, Mariah, Anna and Laurie a shout out this week. You guys are amazing!

We are sad to say goodbye for now to our fabulous, talented, creative, amazing, compassionate Certified Veterinary Technician April. April has been with Northwest Animal Hospital for more than 10 years. She has even worked alongside some of us for more than 23 years! April is taking a break from the veterinary profession to focus more on some of her other passions. We hope that she will miss us so much, that she'll make guest appearances in the office once in a while. We will miss our clinic cat enthusiast and dear friend. Best wishes on your new adventure April!

Canine Influenza Precautions:

Recently, Canine Influenza was diagnosed in dogs at the Humane Society in our area. In the last week, several more cases of the very contagious viral disease have been reported in Hennepin County which means there is increased potential for community spread of the virus. Dogs can get sick from contact with other dogs or from surfaces contaminated with the virus (clothes, hands, toys, water dishes). Dogs with Canine Influenza typically have upper respiratory signs like coughing, runny eyes or nose, throat clearing and fever.

At Northwest Animal Hospital, we have not seen an increase in upper respiratory cases in our patients. However, the virus is highly contagious and symptoms can come on quickly in dogs that have been exposed to the virus. We are taking extra precautions for patients coming in to the hospital, including outdoor examinations for any dog with upper respiratory symptoms.

There is a vaccine available for Canine Influenza but it is currently backordered because of high demand. We do expect to have vaccines available soon and will notify clients via email. If you would like to be added to our vaccine wait list, please email [email protected].

The Board of Animal Health released new guidelines for dog owners to prevent further spread of Canine Influenza in our area.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

-Avoid dog-to-dog contact with dogs outside of your household, especially if they were recently boarding, at dog parks or dog day care.
-If your dog is sick, keep them at home and call your veterinarian.
-Avoid dog parks and other locations where dog-to-dog contact occurs.
-Keep a 6 foot distance between dogs when on walks.
-Canine Influenza can be spread via contaminated clothing and surfaces. If your dog is sick, avoid contact with dogs outside your home.
