Happy 6-year anniversary, thank you all for everything that you do in taking care of our pets and us, and thank you for asking for fun stories to celebrate!
Fun camping story with cows
We went on our annual camping trip in August 2023 with our dogs 14 year old Zoey and 13 year old Kona, and cows seemed to be the theme of our trip. We headed West to our planned remote campsite near Sundance, WY, where we had not been for a couple of years. Our spot was empty as usual, and the firepit we built was still intact, but as we headed down the road to check out the cattle reservoir there was a large herd of cows for the first time in the several years we had been going there and they quickly flocked to us, which is not great for camping with herding dogs. So we headed back to the Black Hills where we had not been in 7 years. We decided to go see an area that we had looked at a few times before along Slate Creek near Hill City, SD. No one was there this time, and it was such a beautiful spot in a big valley with the hills all around, a creek running through, and no recent evidence of cows, so we set up camp. On our second day there however, we were relaxing around camp and we heard cows getting closer. We went out to the dirt road and we saw the cowboys and their horses trotting off after they had just pushed a huge herd of cows towards our camp. As we were standing there trying to figure out what to do, a guy who seemed to know cows and his Cattle Dog in an ancient Suzuki Samurai drove up and told us that all we needed to do was waive our arms in the air and say āooga booga boogaā and the cows will run the other way, and darned if that didnāt work. Turns out our Border Collies were also quite adept at herding the cows away, so we managed to stay there and keep the cows out of our camp for the week.
