Our 16-day trainees took their training on the road today, practicing both place and heel in a busy environment—and they crushed it! 🐾👏
Working on these skills in real-world settings helps dogs learn to stay calm, confident, and focused no matter what distractions are around them. Place builds patience and relaxation, while heel teaches polite, stress-free walking by your side. Together, they create the foundation for a well-balanced companion at home and in public.

Liam graduated from our puppy private lesson program! This guy is so cool. I loved working with him and his enthusiastic owner and family. Liam has learned lots of new skills that will just need to be upheld consistently as he grows into a real big dog.

All of these dogs — Leo, Baaz, and Milano — have made huge progress! Each of them has dealt with some reactivity toward other dogs (barking, pulling, getting overexcited), but look at them now!

In this video, we’re practicing walking in a calm heel position right outside the dog park, with dogs running and barking just a few feet away. These situations used to push their buttons, but now they’re managing with so much more control.

We’ve been focusing on helping them stay calm, confident, and connected to their owners, even in distracting environments. By working just outside the action in a more controlled setting, we’re able to challenge them without overwhelming them. It’s all about building trust and practicing good habits in a way that actually sets them up to succeed!

Ash graduated from his private freedom program! 🤩

Before training, this guy was a bit of a “weirdo”. He was nipping and biting people, and would resource guard his things, especially if you asked him to move from the bed. Ash had to be muzzled all night, every night, so that he wouldn’t bite his adopted dad. He was a challenging dog, especially with two high-energy kids in the house, too!

Now, Ash is a beautifully well adjusted family pet with a great attitude. His body language has completely changed from stiff and unsure to calm and loose. His tolerance to being handled in a way he didn’t like used to be zero, and now we can touch him anywhere and he doesn’t mind. He moves off the bed or out of a room without attitude. He waits patiently on his bed while strangers enter the home. In short, he’s much more normal and a lot less “weird”, and his family is able to have the freedom that comes with a well-trained pet. I’m thrilled with his progress and his family’s progress, and hope to see them all soon at support class!!

Zaya and Belle!!! I am super thrilled with these guys. We’re not all the way there, but Belle made fantastic progress in her program.

Belle is a hyper and hyper anxious dog who was kind of put through the wringer early on! She’d already been through at least one program before working with me. No shade at all to her previous trainer, it just wasn’t what Belle needed. It did, however, give us a great platform to build off of to teach Belle coping skills outside of RUN AWAY! Her obedience ended up being a mask to hide behind, and didn’t allow her to really understand that she was safe. We took a different approach in our training and worked on relationship building and having fun first and foremost, then taught Belle how to shift her mindset from anxious and tight to that fun part of her brain. This was a fun, interesting case, and I couldn’t have asked for a more engaged, observant, interested, and committed owner than Zaya. So excited to see where they go from here!

Buster graduated from his private lesson program! When we started, this guy would hardly let me touch him. He was scared! Now he is super confident and learning all the time. His owners are excited to have some more communication with him! Buster will never meet a stranger again—everyone is his friend now that he’s confident!

There are two words in French Bulldog. The second one is the most important one.
I joke that some dogs are more “French” than “Bulldog”, but not Pepper! Pepper is all “bulldog”, mentally. That means she is stubborn, and tenacious, and feisty. (And also very sweet and silly.)

This is another transformation that makes us love this job. Pepper was extremely fearful when we met, which was manifesting in aggression and resource guarding. Her owners were at the ends of their ropes. No one felt safe in the house, no one was sleeping, and it was taking a serious toll.
In private lessons, we taught Pepper to trust her owners and built her up, while also giving her clear rules and boundaries, including ecollar communication. Not one time did we “correct” Pepper with the ecollar during the program, and yet she completely transformed. No more aggression, no more fear. Still a little pushiness, but easily handled. These three have learned to adapt to each other in an amazing way. It’s difficult to set aside the way you want your dog to be, to love and work with the dog you have now. We’re impressed and proud of this family. Hope to see you guys soon!!

Let’s talk about Roscoe.

The first time I met this barking, growling, lunging Rottweiler, I thought: “oh, this is going to be a cool transformation.” Right away it was obvious that Roscoe didn’t feel comfortable, and didn’t trust his leaders, and his way of dealing with that for the past 5 years was to go forward—aggressively and seemingly at random. (It wasn’t.) Though as a perfessional it was obvious that this was a big, loud, insecure dog, (All bark, no bite.) I could not touch him for our first 4 lessons, and I didn’t try to. I joked that he wanted to eat me, but he was a big chicken.

Roscoe’s owners (wonderful, sweet people, eager to learn) were also insecure! They were worried about not being able to learn the skills needed to train him. I told them they would, if they put in the work, because I was going to teach them.

Well guess what? They learned. They put in the effort. And they did a fantastic job. They are now able to go just about wherever they please with Roscoe and know that they can handle him. He went from an extremely uncomfortable, tense, and reactive dog, to a relaxed and confident, obedient companion during our sessions. I told him we’d be friends. Very much looking forward to seeing these guys in the future!!

Brady graduated from his Private Freedom program with us! 🧡

These guys are a cool pair.
Matthew is super dedicated and definitely saw the results. He had done training with Brady before, but needed some help tweaking his handling and proofing skills. I was very impressed by his improvement over our lessons together and how much he listened to and took in from coaching. Brady isn’t the easiest dog. He’s a hound x bulldog/bully mix, a combination destined to give some serious trouble regarding motivation. We taught them methods that would work long term by building that motivation and relationship.

The difference between our recall lesson and our last review session (1 week later) was HUGE! Brady went from checked out and doing his own thing to engaged, checking in, and recalling beautifully every time. Most of all, Matthew stopped nagging him and made his communication actually mean something to him. I’m very proud of their progress and hope to see them soon at support class.

Thanks everyone for coming out to April’s support class in Alexandria! Despite the rain and impromptu escape to Torpedo Factory, all the dogs (Cooper and Maya, Nash, and Belle) did well working through their individual challenges, and were talked about building up our dogs with easy tricks and new goals for our advanced dogs. Hope to see you guys again next time!
