Let's talk about Posession!

So many times I see people get so concerned that their dog's natural & normal possession tendencies are going to turn into resource guarding, that they end up CREATING a resource guarding issue by constantly annoying or taking things away when their dog has something they value.

Healthy possession is normal! You know your car is yours and you'd have some strong opinions if someone stole it, but you may let a close friend or family member borrow it in a pinch if they asked. You don't want someone sticking their hands in your dinner at a restaurant, but you might offer a portion for your date to taste. Let's give our animals the same respect!

Let your dogs feel confident that what you give them is theirs (as long as it's safe) and that you are the PROVIDER of valuable things. Not the sneak thief, ready to sn**ch it away when they aren't looking.

If you do have resource guarding concerns, please seek a certified & experienced behavior modification trainer asap as this is NOT something to be fixed with punishment or basic obedience training.

Deciding to add a new animal into your household isn't a quick or simple choice. Especially when you already have animals in the home.

Our first responsibility is to the animals in our care and if a new addition would be appropriate & beneficial.

The second is to what kind of animal would best suit our current family set up & the temperament / age / experience that makes a good match.

The third is to see how the potential addition feels about us (the humans), and the life we are offering them.

It's a lot more nuanced than this, but ethical rescues & breeders will help guide you on this journey. They want the best for their animals, and that means waiting for the best match, not just any match. This is why foster-to-adopt programs can be so beneficial and why ethical sources will always stand by their animals and take them back at any time (for any reason) should things not work out.

There is nothing quite like the feeling when an anxious rescue dog learns they are safe & they choose to initiate play. (I wish you could see the silly faces she is making here)

Ms. Dax is doing amazing settling into her new home thanks to the patience, love, support, & clarity by her fab humans (and a growing bond with tall dog Honey Bear too). The world has been a scary place for Dax in the past, and even the best adoptions are traumatic because there is no way to explain to the dog what is happening & where they're going, nevermind that they're home now.
But we model & embody the words we wish they could understand with every action & interaction.
We hold space for them & support them through the transitions as trust is earned & built.
We work at the dog's level and set everyone up for success.
When you focus on the relationship, everything else starts to fall into place.
I'm so proud of Dax, of her humans, and of Honey Bear.
I'm honored to be on this journey with you. Her pawprints are already all over my heart.

Today, I received the most thoughtful surprise from a client. An affirmation mirror with what comes to mind when they think of me. I would've taken the picture with my own reflection but 1) Remy is far and away more interesting to look at, & 2) I'm so touched by their kindness I get all misty eyed when I look into this mirror.

Thank you to each and every client who allows me to be their guide on their training journey. You & your animals give joy and meaning to my life and make this short scientist actually feel like these words in the mirror hold truth.

This gentle giant isn't a huge fan of the rain but was very brave for our adventure walk (and of course got extra special loving & snuggles during our towel party afterwards)

Last night we lit a candle for the best little conartist in the multiverse. Thank you for all you taught me Peanut. You will be so incredibly missed... But I'm thankful you are now at peace and with Daisy. HB, I, and the many friends left behind will take care of your humans for you.

Stay & train sleepovers are an excellent way to keep the training journey rolling while the humans are out of town! Miss Cassie is spending the weekend here at Inglenook and I can't wait to show her mum the fun new training game exercises for them to continue at home.
