Throwback Thursday: Setting Your Pup Up for Success! 🐾
Flashback to 4 years ago! 🕰️ Back then, we shared a series of educational posts called "Set Your Pup Up for Success," and looking back, this advice is just as important today as it was then, but we have learned even more now. These pictures are those we posted almost 4 years ago.

Here is a quick recap of the core tips we shared to help your furry best friend love their grooming routine: below the recap is an update with what may have changed.

High Energy: We don't care how dirty your pup is coming in. our main concern is a happy grooming experience. Let them run and play and get as dirty as you want before coming here. step one in our grooming process is the bath! So let your pup run and be wild and get all their energy out. we don't care there dirty. ❤️
UPDATE: We still don't care how dirty they get before they come here, it's our job to get them clean!

Start Young: Ideally, pups should have their first intro visit by 16 weeks or sooner. Don't wait until they "need" a haircut or until matting starts! Early exposure and socialization turn grooming into a true spa day rather than a stressful event.
UPDATE: Aas long as you and your vet are comfortable, we are comfortable seeing them as soon as you want. we don't let dogs interact and sanitize our kennels, tools and areas between EVERY groom, so transmission of pathogens is pretty low here. along with seeing your pup early, seeing them as much as possible in that first year is key to building a long-lasting happy relationship with grooming.

Keep Up with Maintenance: High-maintenance breeds should be seen every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their coats healthy and tangle-free.
Embrace Shorter Styles: You don't need a long, fluffy cut to have a gorgeous pup. Shorter cuts (under a half-inch) are just as adorable and can make the process much quicker and easier for your dog.
Let’s Communicate: If your dog seems scared or anxious, talk to us! We can often adjust lengths, styles, or the time between visits to make the experience smooth and comfortable.

UPDATE: We still stand by shorter cuts. While a lot of our groomers love seeing those fluffy butts walk out of the salon, puppy butts with wagging tails are so much more important. 4 to 6 weeks is a must for Doodles and dogs with a "hair" coat type. Fur coat types can sometimes go a little longer. but the more regular positive exposure to grooming the better.

A Special Note on Doodles: Many of the most popular breeds we see are Doodles. Because they have hair rather than traditional fur, regular brushing at home is a must. Always chat with your groomer about your specific Doodle, because not all Doodle coats are created equal!

UPDATE: we learned this year at All American that doodles are classified as a mix type hair breed. Doodles are usually a mix between a poodle (with hair) and another breed like labs, Aussies, or goldens (With Fur). So, doodles have a combination hair type, and that still requires a high maintenance grooming schedule to keep on top of there hair cuts and maintenance.

Is your dog’s nail trim time feeling less like a grooming session and more like an episode of Mission: Impossible? 🕵️‍♂️🐶

Say goodbye to struggling with mail trims and hello to the De' Vora Pet Buddy Board!

How does it work? Instead of fighting you for the nail clippers, your pup basically plays a game of scratching to file down their own nails. It’s low-stress, highly effective, and turns nail trims into a fun happy activity. Perfect for dogs who get nervous with regular nail trims.

Stop by The Downtown Dog in Stevens Point to grab yours to save your couch and carpets! ✨🐾

Day #4

And our trip to the All American grooming expo has come to an end. 💕

Day four was a slow day, we took a course on Westies and how to appropriately groom them.

Then we finished talking with vendors and gathering knowledge on tools and products.

My favorite part of All American is the final grooming competition, Creative grooming. 🎨

We went to All American last year for the first time, this was our second year, and I think we will be back in the future.

In an unregulated industry where anyone with no training experience or knowledge can open a business and start grooming. These seminars and training are so important to help keep groomers up to date and help the industry stay consistent.

Day #3 is ending.

We spent today learning about breeds and structure from Johnathan David. So much great knowledge on how to structure cut and all breeds and mixes by learning body types and anatomy.

Then we learned more about doodles, doodle hair cuts, and how to improve our work with your pets.

Dalton won a pair of clippers at one of the booths while we I was picking up some new tools for stripping and carding. I'm still in awe about the skills and knowledge I learned while in the 15 coat type classes and hand stripping course during day two. Cannot wait to apply these skills at the shop.

We finished off the day with classes about business and salon presentation.

Furthering education is a MUST. I have 8 years in the industry and I learned so much from this year that applies to so many of our breeds.

Day #2 down!

Today brought a lot of learning!

We took an all day 4 part course on 15 different coat types and how to properly identify them, bathe them, and groom them. This class had so much knowledge and was definitely one of my favorites and had so much information.

After that event we met up with our friends from Reba's personal touch in Amherst to watch and cheer on Reba and Sisu to compete again this year!

This evening I'm finishing up a course on hand stripping and carding. This is another skill that is going to be applied at our salon here in the coming weeks.

Furthering education is so important, a lot of these skills are basic to grooming and we will be applying them to the salon.
