Get the ideal of "right or wrong" out of your head -- now focus on "is it necessary?"
Does using (+) punishment work? Assuming it is done correctly sure it does. Is it necessary? Not typically because (+) reinforcement also works-and since it concentrates on what you want to be done vs what you don't it allows your dog to "know what you want" ...
If your dog (animal) does not know what the right answer is in the absence of your tool - you have not actually taught your dog the answer...
