A Brooklyn judge just flipped the script dogs are now legally recognized as family, not just property. 🙌

This all started with the heartbreaking case of Duke, a dachshund struck and killed by a car making an illegal turn while on a leash. 💔 His human, Nan DeBlase, took it to court and for the first time, NY’s “zone of danger” law (usually for humans only) was extended to pets.

Judge Aaron Maslow ruled that pet parents can now seek justice for the emotional pain of losing a dog, not just their “market value.” That means no more treating pups like objects they’re family members in the eyes of the law. 🐕❤️

Right now, the ruling applies to leashed pets hit by cars, but it’s a MAJOR precedent that could open doors for future cases.

Animal rights groups are calling it a game-changer that finally matches how society already feels: pets aren’t “just pets.” They’re our kids, our best friends, our family. 🐶👑
