NorthStar WI Dog Rescue & Advocacy

NorthStar WI Dog Rescue & Advocacy NorthStar WI was a 501c(3) non-profit rescue group based in Madison, Wisconsin. It closed in October 2025. Big dogs don't do well in shelters.

We have extensive rescue and fostering experience with German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and Belgian Malinois. While, we are not currently fostering, we do offer advice on surrendering and rehoming options. Let us help with rehoming!

After 12 incredible years, NorthStar WI Dog Rescue & Advocacy has decided to close.

What began in 2013 as a small group of dog-loving friends in Madison, grew into a rescue that helped over 150 dogs find their way home — from German Shepherds to Chihuahuas, from young dogs to seniors and every mix in between.

To everyone who fostered, adopted, donated, volunteered, or simply shared our posts — thank you for being part of this journey. Your compassion and support made it all possible.

Though we’re closing our doors, we’ll always carry the NorthStar spirit: guiding dogs home, one life at a time.

If you adopted from NorthStar, please share a photo of your pup in the comments! We'd love to see our friends.

NorthStar WI is helping a Milwaukee area family rehome Max, a wonderful 5-year-old Collie mix who’s house-trained, fully vaccinated (including rabies), and has been a deeply loved companion. He’s calm and affectionate indoors, with a sweet habit of melting into the floor when someone he loves comes home. Max bonds closely with his people and thrives in a quiet, predictable environment.

Max can be easily startled and has shown some anxiety, particularly around young children. After a recent incident where he reacted fearfully, the family made the difficult decision to find him a calmer home. Their veterinarian observed no signs of illness or aggression, just a sensitive dog who needs the right setting.

Max would do best in a child-free home with someone patient and experienced with anxious dogs. If you or someone you trust can give Max the peaceful life he deserves, please reach out. Shares are very appreciated!

Jesse is looking for a home after his owner passed away unexpectedly. This 3 y/o sweet boy with a great temperament is looking for someone who loves to play fetch as much as he does. Jesse is up to date on all vaccinations & heartworm/lyme test negative. He is neutered and crate trained. Jesse has met cats and doesn’t seem very interested in them. Likes other dogs he has met and lived with two other GSDs. Jesse is friendly to new people and has met children over 10. He is always ready to go for a car ride & is perfect passenger. He also is a gentlemen at the veterinarian. This is a good boy! NorthStar WI is helping the family with rehoming. Contact [email protected] for more information on Jesse. He is located in South Central Wisconsin.

Right now, Coco is in a temporary foster home in the Madison area with an incredibly kind family who stepped up when no one else could. But they already have pets and kids and can only keep him until March 10. Over the next two weeks, he will be passed between two, possibly three, families who are doing their best to keep him safe. However, he desperately needs a stable, long-term foster or, even better, a forever home. Our rescue is unable to take him in, as we no longer foster due to insurance limitations and the difficulty of securing fosters. If no one steps up to adopt him or another rescue can’t take him in, he will have to be surrendered to the Dane County Humane Society. Does anyone know anyone? Please share his story!
