Today is and this year's theme is "Act Now: You, Me Community,” marking the first time in its 19-year history that the theme does not include the word "rabies," showing how well-established this movement has become. Whether you are an individual, part of an organization, or a decision-maker, the time to act is today. Here are some key takeaways from our "Rabies in the U.S." infographic.
🔵 In 2023, rabid animals in the U.S. totaled 3,760 - an increase of 5.1% from 3,579 in 2022.
🦇 Bats were the most frequently reported rabid animal in the U.S. in 2023. Over 1/3 of animal rabies cases in the U.S. in 2023 were bats.
0️⃣ Human cases of rabies in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in 2023.

Remember, the best way to protect your animals from this deadly disease is through vaccination and to keep them away from wildlife that can spread the disease. Learn more at avma.org/Rabies.

The City of St. Cloud announced this week that its Animal Control Department responded to a report of a bat, which later tested positive for rabies.
Rabies is deadly, and it's important to make sure your pets are vaccinated - even if they're exclusively indoors. Tri-County Humane Society is not licensed to vaccinate the public's pets, so we would urge pet owners to contact a veterinary clinic for this service.
Here are some precautions the city's Health and Inspections Department is recommending that residents take:
* Avoid all contact with bats and unfamiliar animals. Never touch wild animals, even if they appear injured or friendly. Teach children to do the same.
* Keep rabies vaccinations current for all dogs, cats, and ferrets. The City of St. Cloud requires dog licensing, and proof of vaccination is part of that process.
* Secure your home against bats. Keep windows and doors closed or screened. Inspect your home for gaps or openings where bats could enter.
* It's not always obvious that a bat has bitten. If a bat is found in a room with a sleeping person, a child, someone who is intoxicated, etc., the bat should be safely collected and submitted for testing.
* If you are bitten by an animal, seek medical care immediately and contact public health officials. To report an incident or request assistance, contact St. Cloud Animal Control at 320-650-3164.
