Fall gardens are the best! The weather is nice, w**ds slow down, and bugs are less of an issue.

I just transplanted lettuces and direct seeded spinach, arugula, baby kale, and radishes.

Ghostbuster or urban farmer?!?

I pulled out the backpack flame w**der to fry some emerging w**ds, and also burn any squash bugs I see on the loose! It’s been a fun day of playing with fire.

Habanada peppers are starting to ripen! These are a fun pepper to grow because they look spicy, BUT they are not.

They were breed by Row 7 Seed Company to have, “all the floral sweetness of the famous habanero, minus the burn.”

Since I’m a heat wimp and can’t even handle the spice of a jalapeño these habaneros are just my speed!

Squash bugs suck! I said it, and I know you’re all thinking the same thing.

I’ve been slacking on managing their eggs, so now more bugs are emerging. A trusty handheld vacuum does a great job of removing the bugs from the plants. It’s not perfect, but a great tool to have for managing populations!

Buckwheat cover crop is flowering and the pollinators are loving it! I planted this after we harvested our potatoes, onions, and garlic. It’s a great summer-time cover crop because it’s fast growing and it keeps my beds planted with living roots before I plant my fall crops.

Once the field dries out I’ll use my w**d whacker to terminate the buckwheat.

Harvested some beautiful beets this morning! I love the “Red Ace” variety for a classic red beet. They size up nicely and the greens are also tasty!

Fall carrots are planted 🥕

This season I’m experimenting with pelleted carrot seeds to see if I like them better. It definitely makes hand sewing a lot easier!

I planted the Bolero variety and used the zipper from Neversink Tools to make my furrow and cover the seeds.

Now, bring on the rain!

Make sure you are scouting for squash bug eggs! You want to remove the egg clusters before they hatch and cause damage to your plants/harvest.

I like to use the sticky side of duct tape to remove the egg clusters. Be sure to take your time while scouting and look under leaves.

Just picked our first watermelon of the season! This variety is sugar baby and it’s a nice, sweet, compact melon. My family devoured it in no time.

We have quite a few watermelons and cantaloupe that look great so I’m excited to be picking more soon.

Just got home from a family vacation and the garden is pumping! Lewis and I tried to get a quick harvest done tonight before we hit it hard tomorrow.

Tomorrow I plan to focus on w**ding, pest control, flower harvest, and seed starting for fall crops.

Big thanks to Melinda E Parker for tending to the garden while I was away!
