WINTER SQUASH! Our goal (as mentioned in our last post) is to grow squash that is resistant to squash bugs and can handle w**d pressure. Although we were unable to find a landrace mix of these Cucurbita Pepo winter squash seeds, we have created a grex of several varieties from . We are hoping for nice cross pollination for our next round of seeds, while keeping them a distance from our Moschata and Maxima squashes. Next year we plan to grow these seeds with another blend landrace seeds for maximum genetic diversity (and nutrients!).

SUMMER SQUASH! This grex has been kicking out some fun fruit. We are deliberately leaving some of our favorite squash on the vine for seed saving and it is incredible to watch them grow so fast!! Our growing space is infested with squash bugs, so finding a plants that can survive has been a big inspiration!!

Seeds used: Savers Exchange Golden Zucchini Squash, Black Beauty Zucchini Squash, Summer Crookneck Squash
Going to Seed Summer Mix: Saved from fruits that were delicious when harvested unripe as summer squash. Seeds were contributed from seven different locations across the United States.

SWEET CORN! Our landrace sweet corn is a 200'x20' grex made up of many seed varieties (see below). Landrace crops are genetically diverse, adapted to local conditions, and require minimal input - like w**ding. This mix will lead to even more incredible corn for next year, as the cross pollination continues.

We were inspired to grow colorful sweet corn after reading "Eating on the Wild Side" by Jo Robinson. She writes about the history, breeding process, and loss of nutrition in white corn.

Seeds used: Going to Seed "Coastal Sweet Mix", "Allie's" Sweet Corn ✊🏼 from Experimental Farm Network , Seed Savers Exchange "Golden Bantam", plus "Double Red Sweet Corn" & Blue Jade Dwarf Sweet Corn from Hudson Valley Seed Co.

Some photos of our landrace watermelon project sponsored by the nonprofit Going to Seed. We feel so honored to be apart of the seed revolution. Landrace plants are grown to adapt to our growing spaces. This means saving the seeds that can withstand w**ds, drought, short growing seasons, pests and diseases. They’re also more nutrient dense due to cross pollination rather than your purebred heirloom seed varieties. 🍉 🍈 💚

Huge shout to the friends that gave a helping hand in the last two weeks. We had a family crisis last week and things felt really out of control. We had several friends show up and help out at the farm. Now that things are settling, I just want to extend my appreciation to Trey, Becky, Lisa, Inger, Avery, and Uncle Loren for the w**ding/ mowing/ sweating.
