You no longer have to juggle paperwork while your dog is trying to make new friends, your cat is plotting an escape, or your child is asking seventeen questions at once.

When you schedule an appointment, any required forms will be texted directly to you along with your appointment reminder. Simply fill them out at home, on the couch, without a leash wrapped around your ankles! 😅

You're a pet owner. Life is busy enough already. If we can make one part of your day a little easier, we're all for it.

Bluff Park Animal Clinic will be closing early on Wednesday, June 24. Our clinic will close at 5:00 PM, and no staff will be on site after that time.

Please note:
🐾 All boarding pick-ups must be completed by 4:30 PM.
🐾 All prescription pick-ups must be completed by 4:30 PM.
🐾 All day admission pick-ups must be completed by 4:30 PM.

We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to plan ahead if you need to pick up your pet or medications that day. Thank you for helping us ensure a smooth closing for our team!

Summer brings real risks for cats — even indoor ones. Here are the seasonal safety tips every cat owner in Birmingham should know, from hydration to heat to parasite prevention.

Cats have a reputation for being self-sufficient, and they've earned it. Your average cat can sleep 16 hours, judge you silently for the remaining 8, and still somehow manage to seem busy with something important. They don't need much — or so they'd like you to think.

But summer has a way of exposing the gaps in even the most capable cat's self-care routine. Heat, humidity, parasites, and seasonal allergens don't care about your cat’s self-respect, and a few of these risks can escalate quietly before you notice anything is wrong. 🐾 Summer is here, Birmingham — and we want to keep your pup safe all season long!
Here's a quick checklist of backyard and summer hazards to watch for: 👇

☀️ Hot pavement — If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Stick to morning/evening walks!
🌿 Toxic plants — Azaleas, sago palms, lantana, and oleander are common in Alabama yards and harmful to dogs. Know what's growing!
🏊 Pool safety — Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Never leave them unsupervised near water.
🌱 Lawn chemicals — Keep pups off treated grass for at least 24–72 hours after fertilizing or spraying.
🍖 BBQ foods — Grapes, onions, corn cobs, and xylitol (found in some peanut butters!) are a no. Remind your guests!
🦟 Fleas, ticks & mosquitoes — Peak season is HERE. Make sure your dog is up to date on prevention.
💧 Fresh water always — Hydration is everything in Alabama heat. Keep that bowl full!

☀️🐾 Hot Weather Safety Tips for Pets 🐾☀️

As temperatures climb, it's important to remember that our furry friends can overheat much faster than we do. They also process heat differently than we do. A few simple precautions can help keep your pets safe, comfortable, and happy all summer long!

🌡️ Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, bright red gums, or difficulty walking can all be signs of overheating. If you notice these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area and contact your veterinarian immediately.

🚗 Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerous within minutes.

💧 Keep Fresh Water Available
Make sure your pets have access to clean, cool water both indoors and outside. Consider bringing a portable water bowl on walks and outings.

🐕 Walk During Cooler Hours
Early mornings and evenings are best for exercise. Midday heat can be tough on pets, especially seniors, puppies, kittens, and flat-faced breeds.

🔥 Check the Pavement
If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Hot asphalt can cause painful burns in just seconds.

🏖️ Provide Shade
Whether at home, the park, or the beach, pets need a shady place to cool down when spending time outdoors.

✂️ Be Careful with Grooming
Regular brushing can help remove excess fur, but avoid shaving double-coated breeds unless recommended by your veterinarian. Their coats actually help regulate body temperature.

🐱 Don't Forget Indoor Cats

Barbecue foods, citronella products, fertilizers, insecticides, and standing water can all pose risks to curious pets.

The heart behind the scenes at BPAC!

Sarah Skocelas has been part of the veterinary world for 2 years — though being married to a veterinarian (yes, she's THAT Skocelas!) for 21 years means she’s basically had a lifetime of unofficial training! Since joining BPAC, she’s become much more than a manager. She’s the steady hand, encouraging voice, problem-solver, and “get-it-done” leader who helps keep everything running smoothly.

What she loves most

Her favorite part of the job? Supporting the team, helping clients, and making BPAC both efficient and compassionate. That balance is exactly what makes Sarah such an incredible asset to our clinic.

A few fun facts about Sarah:
--Favorite animal: The duck-billed platypus (and possibly Bigfoot 😄)
--Pets at home: Silas the dog, a foundling dropped off at BPAC in 2018, and Lucius the rescue cat from GBHS
--Hobbies: Gardening, knitting, reading, and poolside relaxation
--Birmingham roots: She’s lived here since 1979 and even attended UAB and Montevallo

Funny story: She’s so afraid of snakes that she once mistook a can of whipped cream for a hissing snake! 🐍😂

Her best advice for pet owners
“PLEASE put your dog on heartworm prevention! Buy preventatives from your veterinarian or their online pharmacy — over-the-counter parasiticides do not work.”

More than a manager
What really makes Sarah special is the way she cares for people. She has a gift for creating a workplace that feels supportive, welcoming, and genuinely fun, while still running a tight ship and keeping the clinic operating at its best. Many of our staff will tell you she’s become a bit of a “clinic mom” — kind, hilarious, dependable, and deeply respected by everyone around her.

We are so excited to welcome Dr. Archibald to the Bluff Park Animal Clinic family beginning June 1st! From her years of hands-on experience in veterinary medicine to graduating from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine this week, she brings both knowledge and compassion to every patient she meets. 🧡💙

We can’t wait for our clients (and their pets!) to get to know her. Be sure to give Dr. Archibald a warm BPAC welcome when you see her around the clinic! 🐶🐱✨
